Now that I have mt K3 setup I have my Flex 1500 station just sitting on a shelf.
(Flex-1500, TenTec 418 Amp, and DEMI Two Meter Transverter)

I have thought about building the Flex-1500, a small Elecraft T1 tuner and, a Power Supply into a small
portable package since I typically have my laptop with me and also I mostly operate digital modes.

And selling the Amp and Transverter.

Or should I just sell all of it and look into something portable later?

Thoughts ?

Sell all of it and get the matching Elecraft KX3 and amp.  You know it would look GREAT next to your K3 station.

The temptation to sell it and get the KX3 is very strong.

I would sell all of it and buy the Elecraft KPA500 amplifier to go with your K3.

I fully on getting the KPA500, but I need to do some antenna work first.
Currently, my antenna is in the middle of my New pond until the lawn dries out.

How do you like the 1500?  I am looking for an SDR and was thinking the 1500 or save up for a 3000. Which would be better? 1500 and amp or just go for the 3000?

I like my 1500, but the RX bandwidth is annoyingly small compared to my 3000. If you want to do VHF/UHF work, the 1500 is best because it has dedicated transverter ports. If you want an HF rig, the 3000 is a better call.

I like the 1500 and for the price you get a lot of radio. If you want to use Transverters the 1500 is the one to get.
Since I use a remote tuner a built in tuner is unneeded (nor desired). So for me the 1500 was the better choice.

The narrower display (48 KHz on the 1500 vs 96 on the 3000) was never a huge issue for me since I normally run the
display fairly narrow. Even on my Elecraft P3 display that goes 200KHz wide I rarely use ir much over 50 KHz wide.

The only real drawbacks of SDR are being tied to a PC and no knobs.  For me it is easier to turn a
knob or push a button than to grab the mouse and click on the screen, But that's personal preference.

My favorite thing is the tracking notch filters, Those come in quite handy.

Indeed, unless you really like QRP you will need an external amp with the 1500, and probably a tuner. For the price you might as well just buy the 3000. I have a 3000 and love it. In fact I like it so much that I'm sorry I didn't go for a 5000. My only complaints so far are that it gets a bit warmer than I'd like on digital and the fan is a little louder than I'd like as well. But those are really minor complaints. Once the PC is set up none of the Flex rigs are any harder to run than an equivalently complex "knob" rig (they all run identically since they both use PowerSDR software). In fact the most complex part of using it has been the built-in audio processing: 10 band EQ, 2 types of companders, a downward expander/noise gate and a limiter, all together a bit daunting!
