Fired up the TS-480HX, 10meters   28.464

Heard a 6 lander calling CQ from Pahrump NV.

I jumped in and chatted all the way home, picking up the kids, after work, telling me my signal is very strong for a mobile, talking about the weather, etc... I made a joke about Pahrump, NV from the movie.
MARS ATTACKS

and he says " ACK ACK.....ACK ACK....ACK ACK."...My kids LOLOL'd

Got home to log him and it's W6OBB......ART BELL

http://www.qrz.com/db/W6OBB

http://artbell.com/

I thought he sounded familiar, but I had no clue.
Used to listen to his goofy radio show when I worked E-shift years ago.

You just never know who you will meet on the air!

That is one QSL card you definitely need to get.  Send him one, and see what comes back!!

That my friend is probably one of the coolest stories I have heard in a long time.  I am not a "fan" but I have been entertained listening to his show when I caught it over the years.  I would recommend the QSL card as it will be something you will treasure for a long time.  Your kids will also love having it if they remember the conversation.

Told my wife we need to run out after dinner and get envelopes

She says....

" Yeah....I heard his QSL card is made from a strange silver colored mysterious material that can't wrinkle or be torn "

I've always wanted a QSO with Art Bell, among a few others.

I'm jealous!

If you contact him again, make sure to say, "West of the Rockies, you are on the air."

Talked to him on 80 meters when I was living in Arizona. He was telling me about some giant loop array he put up at his property. Something about using a helicopter to hang the wires. His station sounded real good and he was loud. It was about 10-12 years ago. Did not know who he was until I looked him up after the QSO. I used to listen to his AM programs while working a "grave yard" shift.
It's good to know the old man is still active on the air.

Yesterday....he said he was using a log-periodic and "around legal limit"

He said i was unusually loud for a mobile
(....almost like he doubted me)

So i told him about my ts-480hx and tarheel II pics on my QRZ page

We talked about mobile setups and the weather
He bragged that it was 69* in parump

The entire time I'm thinking " he sounds familiar...i wonder if we've talked before"

I was totally clueless until I got home and looked at his QRZ page

I really miss him on Coast to Coast AM.  It's not even close to what it was.

I heard him on 10m SSB on Saturday afternoon, but he was getting off the air so his wife could use the clothes dryer.

He was running his Alpha am and his dryer on the same 220 VAC line.

Dr. Piazza is a ham?  Cool.

Although I thought he lived in Calif even after moving Front Sight to NV.

The only thing that made night-shift bearable was his show, when he was hosting it.  Now it's pretty bleh.

Neat contact! He's always been a radio geek.
