Knowing what frequency you are often often will tell you what you are hearing. Different modes are usually confined to specific frequencies.
If you are on 14.070 USB for instance, then the signals you are hearing ther are PSK31. Here is a link to some sound files to help you identify what you are hearing. Digital Modes Samples |

Thanks. Oddly enough just about a minute after my post I ran across
several BPSK31 hits on 10 meters. They translated fine.

Something else that is sometimes helpful is to ensure that you have RSID turned on...

FYI....not everyone has RSID enabled when they transmit, but it won't take too long before you figure out what the most commond digital modes sound like by ear.
