Because here I come! We had a discussion yesterday on the repeater about a couple local guys using packet on HF but not having much luck since they were so close. One of the guys just got a new 897 so now he can do it on vhf. Later that night at the clubs quarterly meeting it was brought up again.

Well that's what I needed to get my butt in gear. This evening in about 30mins to an hour I had xastir and soundmodem both up and running and txing packets over my speakers. I started messing around in the program and was blown away with what all it has. I'm a C2 systems guy and like to think I have a good grasp on military systems and I think this is close to par with a few of them (not as polished tho)

Things still to do-
1) donner interface
2) APRS antenna

Later
3) a LMR radio for packet (hince other thread)
4) use my home server as an I gate maybe anothed lmr radio for that

And most of all... get more people in my area on board!

I should probably give Xastir another look. I didn't really care for it when I tried it. I still need to get 2-way APRS going in my truck instead of simple beaconing.

I'm starting to think about:

An ammo can (of the 50 cal variety)
A dual band mobile (would like the wouxon but maybe the TTY)
A Raspberry Pi (running Xastir)
Small Screen used for external displays on cameras (around 7")
A Byonics serial GPS (with USB converter to Raspberry PI)
12v Battery
Small PS or just Batt Tender JR
Roll up JPole or Ed Fong

OHHHH I just thought what about another can that contains more batteries and a linksys router for meshing!
echomancer
Seriously.

I'll be curious to see if you get this up and running. I had thought about doing something similar with a BeagleBone, but then found that (to my knowledge), no one has gotten Xastir to compile correctly for ARM and I'm not practiced enough to solve that problem.

There is a guy on YouTube who used an Arduino or BeagleBone to drive an LCD and give text data about position and packets, just no maps if I remember correctly. Let me look that up, brb...

...here ya go!
There are two ways to do something: The right way and right now.

Ok first problem... Raspberry Pi's are hard to come by. that and the cost although its cheap the netbook I already have for Ham radio is already paid for so thats my new platform.

number 2 the TYT radios are not dual band like I had thought and cost more then a Kenwood 281 so the end goal is to use a Kenwood 281 however the proof of concept will be done with my HT.

Off to the garage...

So here I am. I went with our local club to pay our dues to the tower owner of one of the clubs repeaters. We keep the grass mowed every couple months and we get a 250' tower While we were there we started talking packet again so I got it into high gear last night and this morning.

I have soundmodem running on my laptop in kiss mode. xastir is using it to tx/rx its tx but no one is around for me to test out rx.

my interface is homebrew cables from the HT straight to the laptop. with the HT's VOX set it works just fine. once I get it tested im going to throw together a box with a couple pots and jacks so i can adjust the audio levels. but so far so good.

as for the go kit. I built a cardboard mock up that fits in a 5.56 linked ammo can (same size as a 50cal) it has a spot for my netbook. a couple HT's, a couple small 12v batteries and one of my recycled 12v 5A power supplies. As soon as I get a chance ill head over to the wood hobby shop and make it out of nice stuff.

Now if a linux n3rd wants to help me answer me this:

Fresh boot soundmodem fires right up. If I stop soundmodem and try restarting it then I get an error that it can't access plughw:0,1 < my interface using alsa
