THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Initial impression is that a fuse blew. Do they have fuses? How hard are they to repair vs. the $99 to just buy a new one? 73 |

If you're asking how hard it is to repair a SMPS, you don't want to try. No offense, they're just rather complicated compared to a linear one.
Buy another is my suggestion. |

I'm going to give up on typing and doing math for a while! The doc I got that from was an image so I couldn't copy & paste. I had to type it by hand... |

Make sure neither the negative or the positive is shorting to the case. It has a floating case and should not be at all connected to the negative side of the output. This is one of the most common forms of failure with these supplies. |

Got an email from them. They said that if it isn't in warranty that it would be cheaper to buy a new one. Even included a link to get one for $99.

Well that sucks, but at least you know where you're at. Time to look for a replacement. I wouldn't hesitate to get another new one just like it if that's the size / type you need.

I have been using Astron supplies for over 20 years without one failure I can remember. Back in the early 90's when switching power supplies became "commonplace" in computer equipment and homebrew supplies, they were noisy as in, generated alot of hash in the HF bands. I was turned off to them then and have never strayed from the Astron brand. It's like a Ford vs. Chevy thing in a way, but I'm loyal to Astron brand and have no reason to switch...pun intended. Astron linear supply page. I am using an RS-20A right now. It has been on (barring power outages) since I moved to this QTH 5 or so years ago. I have used many different models of Astron supplies up to the RS-50M, none have ever failed I can remember. Just my preference and experiences. ETS _ Astron supplis can be found at all the ham retailers. |
