THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Clay Vitis is a long haul truck driver who uses CB both in his daily work and as a fellow prepper. Clay is also a licensed HAM however he spends most of his time on the CB bands. He joins us today to discuss the ins and outs of CB radio communications for every day prepping.

Note to all HAMs, today’s show is NOT why CB is better than HAM or vice verse, it is about CB as a technology for preppers. We have a HAM radio episode planned with Expert Council Member Tim Glance scheduled in the future.

It is my belief that HAM and CB both have their places and HAM is far more specialized, making it practical for the specialist and not quite so practical for the guy that doesn’t turn a radio very often other than for specific events or while traveling.

Join Clay and I Today as we Discuss…

* Cheap CB Options
o How much do you need to spend on the equipment
o What brands or models offer a good value
o Base station, mobile or handheld
o The capabilities of lower end equipment

* Upper end cb options
o What constitutes a “good” cb
o Where are the best places to find upper end equipment
o Why upper end cb’s perhaps are not always the best “value”
o Upper and lower sideband and their practicality

* Antennas for CB Radios
o Antenna options for mobile and base station use
o The idea of “homebrewing” an antenna
o Creating stealth antennas

* Optional equipment
o Tuning meters
o Amplifiers (including legal/ethical issues )

* Fun with CB’s
o A cool game you can play with fellow breakers
o Learning the technology, community and geography at the same time
o Realize there is more to CB that the “one nine”

* Practicality of CB from a survival/prepper standpoint
o Ready to run “out of the box”
o Inexpensive
o Reliable
o Can be taken to specialized levels but not specialized
o Lots of users (especially during a disaster)
o Plug and play installation with portability
o Great for general travel info

I added BOLD print to hopefully prevent a conflagration....

off to listen...

Cb no! Ham only!

Just kidding. Use what you have if its a $40 cobra cb from wally world its better the a cup and string. i keep my bubble packs handy because they are small cheap and work. I keep a cb around all though i haven't hooked it up thanks to ham gear keeping me busy lol. The argument i do have however is 'preping' is about being ready and a step ahead cb may work but its not the best. People just hear about the test and fees and get lazy and revert to cb.

listened last night/this morning

I agree with parts, other parts I disagree with pretty hard.....

like the part where he said that everyone is limited to 4 watts so it's an even playing field....

I know here between DC and Boston, you're not getting anywhere if you don't have an amp.... 2-5 miles is pushing it and you're not going to find a clear freq either....

I DO agree that it's a tool to keep around - the other day there was a pretty big brush fire on my way to work (new area that I'm not usually in) - traffic was pretty bad and roads were blocked off....

I didn't have local Police/Fire/EMS programmed because the county I was in is all digital (and I still don't have my scanner) so I threw my radio over to CB channel 19 (big truck corridor) and found out what was going on and where it was backed up....

I keep the capability but don't ever use it

I'm looking forward to the HAM episode
