So my 25 year old Shimano Bantam Coriolis is really starting to show it's age.

Freshwater bass fishing.

What should I get?  $150 budget.

if you really like it, check ebay.  They are $20.

The Daiwa Tatula is hard to beat for around $100.

I was able to get my curado 200HG for 159, normally it is 179 though. If it handles bull reds and jacks, I'm sure 99% of freshwater will be fine

Lol, that takes me back to 1974 when I BEGGED and PLEADED for Mom to buy me a Zebco 202.  She thought I'd put my eye out.

She finally relented, though, and here I am, 40 years later, with both eyeballs and decades of fishing memories. Think the 202 cost about $2.02 in 1975.  Maybe $4.04, but they were damn cheap.

Shimano Curados are about 150 now. I personally like the Chronarch a bit better and for 200 that would be my choice.

Either one, you can't go wrong. Shimano makes good stuff.

FWIW- many people around here use the Curado in Fresh and salt water both, so the corrosion resistance is good. I honestly haven't seen many Chronarchs out there, but it's probably due to the higher price point.

glad I checked this post, I need a new bait caster for steelhead, and salmon (everything from Pinks to Kings).

I had a cheap Abu Garcia $70 rod reel special that didnt last long.

are any of the baitcasters posted above good with 15lb test line?

Is this salt or fresh?  And is this for trolling?

If fresh, and not trolling, then yes, they will all do fine with 15 lb line.  If salt, or trolling, I'd go with a different BC design, the "round" kind that you see with surf casters.  The ones mentioned here are really designed for bass fishing and the like.

I'm going to use it primarily in fresh, but might hit the mouths of the rivers where it's still salt

Then I'd be inclined to go with one of the "round" styles.

ok. I'm assuming the round ones are more for salt water? do they cast just as well?

My fishing is for salmon and steelhead on the rivers and at their mouths.

I'm going to be keeping an eye on Amazon on cyber monday.

Daiwa makes a "coastal" reel that sounds so like just what you are looking for. Same siE and weight as a bass reel, but rated for salt water use.

Abu Garcia Revo STX.

Great for bass.  Superlight, low profile and durable.  Allows you to cast all day without wearing out your arm.  It balances out very well on a good rod.

Round reel, Ambassadeur 6000, this is the reel by which round reels are  judged.

Lews all day. American made and probably the best value you'll see.

I've got a Lews Speed spool LFS.  They run right at $100 and I've been very happy with it.  Small compact size, smooth, light.  It replaced my 15 year old Shimano something or other that I got when I was a teenager.

Keeping it on the "cheaper" side, Lew's Speed Spool LFS and BPS Pro Qualifier are hard to beat...the Pro Qualifier is on sale for $69 right now too (until 4/17 I think), but the Lew's for $99 is awesome.

I bought 2 Abu Garcia SX's and they very badass.  Super smooth and low profile I have 20lb braid on one and 12 on the other.  Two different gear ratio's for two diff techniques. Put them on my go to road Falcon Buccoos made in the USA

I am considering buying one as well...damn I am so afraid though of spending half my time clearing back lashes, spinning reels will handle most of the fish I catch but occasionally(once or twice a year) I will get into a LM that breaks me off.

I always hear great things about the Lews speed spools.  I think I am going to get a BB1 inshore sometime soon for redfish and specs.

The lews LFS speed spool is a great reel for the money.
The shimano caenan, citica, curado and pretty much every other reel they make, are also great.
Abu garcia Revo series is also good.
Bass pro shops pro qualifier is also a good reel.

Really, once you get into the $100 price range and up, they are all various shades of great.

Also, don't overlook a good rod. its just as, if not more important.
I like the abu garcia varitas and the 13 fishing omen black.
