Forstchen is a good author. The books get too interrupted by speeches. I was not expecting Patriots or a Death Lands novel with a ton of violence. It was a nice change of pace from the typical survivalist novel in that aspect. More action couldn't hurt though.
There are some really interesting concepts in both books that I would have loved some more pages on rather than another speech by John. At the risk of sounding unAmerican or unpatriotic, I think people would be much less concerned with the state of the union than they will be their immediate families. Especially after many of their loved ones had just starved to death. Just my opinion. I really enjoyed a lot of the first book. Food and water were the most important items. Common medicine was a necessity. There are some extremely well thought out points made on prescriptions etc. All that said I will buy the third one when it comes out. Speeches and all I would like to know how the story ends. |

just finished the audible version, I enjoyed it.
He is one of a handful of authors that do a good job on this genre IMO.....once you run out of their offerings and try some of the others you'll REALLY come to appreciate the good ones...

Never knew there was a 2nd book. Just ordered both the 2nd and 3rd, plus the 7 books of the Survivalist series by A.American.
Had a $100 gift card laying around LOL, and all 9 books on Amazon came out to $90 something with free shipping. |

I liked the first book. The 2nd was meh. The third wasn't impressive, but was still entertaining.
I live quite close to the town and we actually drive up there and through Montreat college campus. Great little town and campus! |

Listening to the 2nd now. I really liked the first one but I agree, too many speeches in the 2nd. Also, the guy reading completely mixes up accents several times on certain characters, sounding like a guy from Boston in one chapter, then a redneck in the next. He also uses a southern accent on John throughout the whole book when he is from the north. I know that seems frivolous but it gets very annoying. Will probably listen to the 3rd one day however.

I got to ride up through the bear hunting property above
Montreat with a friend who is a share holder. This is the property where the main character was kidnapped and held for a while. It was pretty cool making a little deeper connection with the author & the characters in the book, like riding through town and ID'ing locations talked about inn the book, also. And I agree that the books aren't that good, but entertaining enough to finish. Also, I met Dr. Forstchen a few years ago at the prepper conference at Ridgecrest.
