One of the fascinating things about a “Black Swan” event like the Sinai Nuke, is the myriad of responses society goes through until the new accepted norm has found its feet, like someone standing in pirogue when a surprise barge goes by on a bayou. Everything is rocked, everything is heaving in the dangerous wake left by the unexpected proximity of a large turn of events.

Some may find themselves arse over feet, falling into the gator infested troubled waters, others riding the waves and making good time to new opportunities for trout and redfish which have been pushed out  along the banks. More than a few will freeze in fear, waiting for it all to subside and go away.

Tim thinks he’s surfing a wave, I think he’s already crayfish bait. He’s a pawn on the Gehr chessboard about to be eaten by a prawn. I would love to see some sort of confrontation between him and Maria, if a little slip of a girl like Bi could do that much damage to him, imagine what a real woman could do.

Thanks for the update DC! You might not see me for a while, have to take a trip to the old world to settle some business and tamp down the earth on a couple graves. Fortnight at least, perhaps a month, but I’m already excited anticipating the updates I’ll get to catch up on!

Thanks for the update DC.

Small typo, maybe?

'Miguel! Pistola! Oro!  Vena aqui!'  Should be 'Ven aqui' I believe.  'Vena aqui' should translate to 'Vein here', whereas 'Ven aqui' translates to 'Come here'.

GENERAL NOTE: Pretty obvious my 'new schedule' is hardly effective.  Another kind of issue, let's

call it a 'composition' ( purposefully meaningless language, how did I do?  Excellent!  Thank you...)

continuously rearranges itself as a gigantic time sink.  So.  If I DO NOT PUT UP UPDATE BY SUNDAY

NIGHT, WILL PUSH IT OVER TO NEXT FRIDAY IF I CAN.  Probability I can put something up next 48 is

about 40%.  Next Friday, 90%.

--highstepper, very pleased to see.  Yes, horrible to understand how many Tims/Sylvias out there.

Clinical/neural/genetic: you're looking at maybe 1 in 100.  Environmental equivalents, trauma/culture

your looking at maybe low 10/s.  Some cultures, a particularly malevolent religious cult, for instance,

has EVOLVED/WAS SELECTED to produce 'sociopaths' as a critical control element/storm troopers.

Golly Gee, I wonder what the religious/warrior cult might be?  It is very very successful.

--DFarm, good eye on the typo. The regular votes for paper copies continue to amaze. I had assumed

this would always be E-book stuff.  There will be a solution at some point.  But assume the ebook version

will precede by a minimum of several months, while I sort out when/how.  Binary and her crew will be

traveling soon.  They will appear at the very end of the book.  She is a 'long' character, built to last,

assuming I have many years to do this.  Obviously if I were a faster writer pretty much every character of

note deserves their own book/series.  A story through the eyes of Byron York, for instance, would deeply

satisfy every curb-stomping, throat cutting, trigger-tapping reader's desire.  Oh--yep, the next book is

from Gretzky "The Orangutan"/s point of view.  One of the Deputy's best friends/crew mates.  Gretzky is

a Byron York.  Gretzky is my ultimate good monster in this series, which I hope to keep going for years.

The only "bigger monster" in the extended Gehriverse, which includes Injured Reserves, is Gretzky Sr.,

who is the team lead/crew chief/boat driver/ in Injured Reserves.

GRETZKY SR. from "Injured Reserves":

The boat swung in, a deep vibration
and a long coasting shadow and Billy let Tate go to float above, aimed his still
body at the dim shape of the dock, vision narrowing for lack of oxygen.

His life now down to this dim tunnel
of remaining light and as he died he reminded himself that Gretzky knew him
better than he knew himself , had a plan for
everything and sure enough Gretzky caught Tate's body, held him still with his
head above water so Billy could climb Tate's only leg, sink numb hands in
fabric with all he had left and he rose to the surface.

Exhaled and arrived back in the swollen bright
and bellowing world of air and noise.
Gretzky stepped on his left wrist as it rose and pinned it to the dock.

"Five seconds
while I put some lipstick on,
Gretzky said
and leaned into an MG-42 in the stance of a match shooter at Camp Perry and
fired three bursts as a single rolling clap of sound at one of the cliffside gunners and Billy had just enough strength to
turn as he swallowed his own blood to see a man topple, catch on a snag of limb
and claw at himself as Gretzky's rounds took an arm off, then a leg, then blew
the head to pieces in a smear against the rock, red as a clown's carmine lips
in good light, a black spray in the shade.
Concussive decapitation, meant lipstick, everywhere.

Gretzky tossed his smoking weapon
behind him, said
"Hang on,
then,
"Fold his arms,
no grab handles here but if you crossed a man's arms in a heavy canvas jacket a
man like Gretzky could pull him out of a tar pit by the collar, let alone lift
him out of seawater, and Tate, head slumped and lolling was up on the dock, and
now out of view.

Billy dropped back down, his left
side and arm numb but he had just enough control to use his right hand to pound
his left between the broken boards of the dock, and he hung there, a broken
doll on a broken limb.

The Oerlikons
firing over him, rippling the water with an orange brush which lit a swirl of
motion to his right, a spiral of minnows spinning in a glittering cone around
some ancient need, The Great Wheel in all its oblivious and remorseless
beauty.

Uncaring.

Of himself.

And of his
men.

He was ready to go.

He had done enough.

And he felt Gretzky's machinist's
grip, a clamp of steel on his wrist and he was lifted onto the dock, spun
around, and tossed on the deck, Gretzky leaping behind him and grinning down.

"Well done,
Billy, let's go home.
( AMAZON Kindle Single Injured Reserves )

--Currently, very much appreciated on submittal time but I need to harden the F up.

Long process, this is a new skill for me.  Much to learn, particularly managing it

as a 'job' and not an 'art' as in 'oh wow wait for inspiration', and so on.  The story

has been seen, in other words.  I have to muscle the description forward, and that

is a skill I do not have yet.

--Radiohack, most pleased to see you as always.  You speculations on the nature of Tim

and Sylvia's fate are in the near nature of 'SPOILERS' ( HINT: NO SPECULATIONS

AS TO FUTURE EVOLUTION OF STORY...PLEASE...AS IT MIGHT AFFECT OTHER

READERS' PROCESS OF DISCOVERY ) And no harm no foul in this case, Radio.

In other words, I think even you will see some very unanticipated bends and arcs

and new ideas.  Understand your trip, Radio.  A solemn business, that tamping of

dirt.

As I read Injured Reserves, the mental image of the main characters solidified as the story unfolded. For reasons unknown to me, from the first introduction, I could see Gretzky as if I were standing on the boat with him; the same phenomenon occurred during the brief encounter with Gretzky Jr. in TSS.

Maybe the characters are so fully formed in your mind, their personas are communicated as whole and definite; consequently, the reader processes them with the same certainty?

Maybe subliminal messages were encoded in the surrounding sentences; and wet, literary robots implanted themselves in the cortex of my brain; then subliminally input the Gretzkys into my conciousness as further texts activated conceptualization programs, which were effected by the wet brain-bots.

Okay, probably not that one, but who doesn't like a good conspiracy theory?

Either way, I'm stoked to see Gretzky as the central character of the third book. (Assuming Injured Reserves is the first).

Don't sweat the schedule; the product will be remembered, the speed in which it was created will not.

Thanks for the work your doing.

Keep on.

GENERAL NOTE: Working on update.  Appreciate patience.  In reference

to a comment below I will stop making predictions as to updates.  Will just

do my best.  In the realm of too much information: along with normal

life stuff, and not being a full time writer, there is a severe and ongoing

health issue in proximity.  I would rather it were mine.  But it is not.

--DesignatedMarksman, much continuing thanks. We saw Gretzky Jr.,

"The Orangutan" only briefly, but he will be and was intended to be

a character who could carry his own book.  As an extension of his

father, seen in Injured Reserves, and Billy Spears, who wrote Injured Reserves,

he will have a great deal to say and do.  He might be the closest we will

ever get to the mind of The Deputy, Billy Gehr's father, as he and Gretzky

Jr. were together for so many years, with the added dimension that what The

Orangutan cannot finesse, he can demolish.  The Orangutan is the biggest hammer

the Gehriverse will ever swing, other than his father, Gretzky Sr.,

and possibly, Billy Spears.

--zoe17, much thanks for your patience and I will just post updates in the

future, as they make the grade.

--PFunkk a handshake someday and we know each other pretty well now.

The characters are very well-formed, yes, down to eyelashes and eyebrows.

The issue for story-telling is always converting a second which could be

a page down to a sentence or two. The Cantina Massacre is an event of

a minute or two, approach to exit, and is approximately ninety pages?

It could be a thousand.  Your brain-bot analogy is appropriate: language

is code for the mind.  The brain is a wet computer.  And so on. Not a conspiracy

theory.  Pull hard on this string and see where you find yourself. On the

other hand, maybe not a good idea, because the more you understand

the farther you will find yourself from most conventional peer groups.

There might be some Planck constant/other entanglement issues, for

instance.  There are some rather unnerving non-science sciences involved.

I imagine you might be familiar with the idea that a person under observation,

even from a thousand yards, through pretty good glass, and even from a

monitor, a thousand miles away, might alter their behavior? A great deal

is not understood, but only observed.

"The speed in which it is created is not," much thanks PF.

--last/crusader, understood on over-promising.  A risky experiment, it

appears.  I will do my best.  And no more promises, at best only vague

suggestions.

--Equator, very good to see you and have you been here before and I do

not remember?  Many names/avatars now, almost 1.5 years, but at this

stage would prefer not to forget any, or all.

--Toyforever, very much thanks on comments.  If you do find Injured and

find it useful/appealing, would you please post a brief comment on Amazon?

The reviews/rankings make a huge difference, and if I am correct they will

be very important in the future.

GENERAL NOTE: Ok, back to work.  The update will appear within...a month.

This story will be finished at some point.  I was hoping for a September earliest

launch date, as September is the best month for indie writers, but that looks

increasingly unlikely.  But this will get done.  Then I will write another story.

And another.  And another.  It could take a really long time.  I hope it does.

GENERAL NOTE: as slow as this is, approaching end of this story.  For those of you who

are still here, I will be posting a timetable AFTER I have finished, proofed, edited, of

when I will be publishing,

--Currently, good to see you, and I know it seems odd to say but I will remind you and everyone

that I have no other plans for the next twenty years except to expand this and other overlapping

worlds.  So hopefully the ride is just starting!

--zoe17, delighted to see you and knowing your reading habits and speed your patience counts

double.  "Last of our generation" we shall see.  Good habits (philosophies/mindsets/other) can/might/have flourished in hard times.  My model is Brazil, and particularly Sao Paolo.

A city of over 10 million.  Staggering wealth and total despair, cheek by jowl.  There are

fine people there, raising families, wary of the depredation around them, but they carry

on.  We should do better.  Do you see your friends here, zoe17?  I do.  Nuff said at this

time.

--mnvwguy02, much thanks for sticking with this.  Within a few months you should have

a 500 page book, substantially the same but also heavily edited.  Hopefully it will be

worth more that one read.  The tutorial from The Deputy/Billy's Father might be of

interest on a second read, for instance.

--kermit, much thanks.  The time sink here has an unexpected element.  But some form

of this will happen to us all, most likely, although I have an ongoing interest in various

life extension/mediation technologies.  A fascinating future of chipped slaves, obedient

above all else, with extended life spans...as long as they obey....so much fun!

--On Spreading The Word--yes, I am counting on you all.  This dialogue and everyone

here are the only advantage I have in a very competitive market.  Fortunately the dialogue

is my favorite part of this.  There are people here I hope to meet someday.

--GreenGiant very much thanks.  As someone generally suspicious of sentiment I am

still very grateful for the patience and consideration shown here.  Nuff said.

--DesignatedMarksman...That.  Is.  Just.  So.  Cool!!!!!!  What a brilliant punctuation

for this thread!  Hopefully when he is twenty he will be on the other side of this story,

and all those that follow.  The Future.  On a poncho liner.  Just brilliant.

--stimpsonJ, have had my eye on the Wiggy's poncho liners for some time.  Too long

since I've been walking my tools here and there.  Just...day-um.  Have a gigantic

stack of now antiquating gear waiting for....waiting for....a future I insist I will make

happen.

--PFunkk, you have some pretty firm knowledge on my method/intent/design.  If I do

well enough, long enough, I will harness/displace the information in these comments/footnotes

into other fiction.  I have an annotated Injured Reserves in mind, the first page of Injured

has seven pages of notes, about 2000 words.  Probably pointless, as Injured will almost

certainly remain inaccessible to all but the most practiced readers.

On quantum domains/sciences/other, The unknown is obviously infinitely more

than the known, to think otherwise would assume that new knowledge stops....now.

The chronometer was invented in the last several hundred years.  And we still do

not know what "time" is, other than our pitiful attempts to describe what we can

only perceive as an effect, and our equally crude attempts to confine it to a tool

we can 'use.' It can be absolutely determined that 'time' blurs, future to past, in

laboratory settings.  Check out studies relating to video observation of pleasant

pictures, interspersed with unpleasant pictures, and subject/observer subcon

anticipation of 'unpleasant' picture which have yet to appear on screen, as measured

by respiration/pulse/etc.  And if time can blur in seconds/fractions of seconds, why

not years?  Decades?  Centuries?

I am trying to decide if I am being lied to...and loving it because I love the song.

Or am I being told the truth, by an idiot.

I knew...without error...when Peter Jackson changed the character who named the Balrog by name that the story he meant to tell was never meant for me.  George Washington does not make Patrick Henry's speech at St John's.

Here...we are presented with gates.  And I can hear the rooster crowing the dawn already.  See the face of the wraith that suddenly doubts.

But I think somewhere shy of Eowyn and the witchking this battle will end.

Minas Tirith was run by a maddened fool who incinerated himself...not someone who would spend days practicing incinerating others with a 32oz cup of gasoline and soap flakes.  You know...to get it right.

No...Gehr Waffenfabrik isn't guarded by bows and trebuchet...here...there be belt-feds!

DC.
You neglected to post the instructions for sending you my money.
A simple oversight I am sure.

GENERAL NOTE: progress very slow but steady.  No one more amazed than I.

Might be appropriate to start thinking about one month out.  Obv. I must

be very careful about hard dates.  But....getting close.  At some point

I will begin IM'ing likely readers/buyers on possibility review.  You have

all already written the best reviews I will ever have, and they are buried

in these footnotes and comments.

--skywarp989, I will take what I can get.  Much thanks.

--highstepper, yes you probably have a good idea of at the very least the "range"

of possibilities.  I have had several very informed speculations sent by IM.  But

so far, I am pretty sure I have some unexpected 'permutations'--and at this point,

I, and you, and everyone should probably not speculate in public.  Hints and mentions

of like minds can very often take on a kind of critical mass: what cannot be seen can

be determined by molecular weight, gravity, distortion, shadows in the right light.

So....hush.  Hush, everyone.

--StimpsonJ, just killing it man.  Just killing it.  The "depth" of Tolkein's worlds simply

confounds.  And done in pen and ink, and hand typed, and hand corrected, and typed

again.  No word processor for this bard and poet and seer.  Eowyn and the Witchking

will be a battle for another time, another book.  Maybe ten or twenty years from now.

These are grand battles in this scale, but skirmishes compared to what will come, I

suppose.  A big task here is to keep the scale "small"--a general armageddon witnessed

by characters we know very well, with the big national and international stuff in the

background.  All catastrophes are local, for the participants.  This will be a Tim Bassinger

quote in the next installment.  He doesn't much care about Europe, when he is getting

his face ripped off, for instance.  And neither will we.  "Belt-feds"--oh yeah.  And a few

other tricks.  Sometimes the old stuff works pretty good.  And Gehr Waffenfabbrik has

a deep view to history.  Now StimpsonJ I might have missed something about money?

Now your job and everyones will be to buy a book for less than a decent burger, and pimp

it to their friends, and in their reviews.  Later I might come up with something metallic,

and you can crank some parts together, and ponder something drinkable from the proper

distance.  A big part of what is just a dream, at this point.  We shall see, ST. I like to avoid

"money" as much as possible for many reasons, but I am almost always willing to trade?

If I could trade books for bullets, I would, for instance. Or coin.  No such mechanism

exists on the scale I need, hence....Amazon, et al.

--airsix, very glad you liked that.  Many tricks to repaint picture.  This is one.  Also a

savant voice is like primitive art--it has no artifice or deception.  Very raw.  A key

measure of autistics/etc./other impairments is the inability to recognize or calculate

or manifest "deception."  A very endearing view of the world, when everybody else

is lying.

--zoe17, much apologies.  That stings a little, that I am so tardy you stopped checking.

In the future I am pretty sure I will be able to propose much more rigorous schedules.

Not yet, and just a hope.  But we shall see.

--grywlf52, good to see you.  And yes this will read much better and make vastly more

sense when you can see the events as a weave, and not a string.

--Field/MP, much thanks, and your avatar is one of several that causes a spontaneous

pulse of laughter every time.  Just never gets old.  The Death Cult, named and cartooned.

Perfect.

--Call2Arms, much appreciated and from a distance, too.  The book all in one piece is

not that far away.

--ny15, much thanks.  Speed still an issue, obv.  Trying hard not to promise too much.

--Former11B, another deep ear on something I will have to fix.  Difference between fiction/

printed page words/what might be said.  I agree it looks "dissonant" and every time you

guys pick up on something, pretty much without exception, you are correct.  The meaning

and "tone" of Tim's language can be kept same same, but modified, less "wet/nasty" and

it will be.  Will fix on edit.

--Piddler, crack me up.  Billy Bob and Kill Bill.  Um....let's not date ourselves, mmkay?

The comments below max funny.  Piddler, google "crossfit girls"--and poke around.

Binary is pure punk/tech/post-modern.  As the country fractions, and it is, we are

seeing an explosion of subcultures.  Binary and her sisters are real.  Socially liberal

libertarians with a very harsh view of big .gov--they watch particularly information

tech, food tech, media tech.  As I've said before, some of them are our friends.

--StimpsonJ, Piddler just needs to root around a bit on the interwebz.  He will find

what he needs.

--Piddler, understood on modern culture.  Billy Gehr doesn't have the vaguest idea

who Madonna Not the Mother of Christ is, other than as a minor haggard blasphemy

aging into oblivion, and he could care less. And we don't care either.

--StimpsonJ, like Maria, I have a Binary in mind.  An acquaintance only.  But I've

seen a few.  Quite a few in Austin, for instance.  Start with crossfit girls, and your

looking for the ones who aren't quite so intoxicated with themselves, and can code.

They are out there.  Binary is 22, by the way.  Makes sense, right? ( a wink goes here...

um...binary...why not double down on...binary.... )

--Rhonda Roussey, much like, ( what's not to like? ) and if you ever see her interviews

she is "gearing down" for the interview format, much like Sandra Bullock--much

more going on with these ladies than media can manage in short bursts, and they

both have a lot to protect. Rhonda is having a much deserved good time, but

pretty good chance she is capable of substantive conversation.  Sandra Bullock,

you are looking at a world class genius who is always courteous, and polite,

and just profoundly kind, and fully understands that most of her or any audience

would find it incomprehensible, that for instance, she speaks fluent German.

--cpaspr, I see where you are going.  Try
Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, with same attitude

and vibe of Vesper Lynd (sic?) "The Money" in first of new James Bond films.  Massive

wattage.  Synapses to spare.  Snap, crackle, pop.

--TriumphRider, much thanks.  Must. Keep.  On.

--wingsnthings, much thanks and book on the way.  On Injured and boat, not dense at

all, very complicated plot/story/timing/background. Short version: very difficult to explain

concept "signalling" in warfare/combat/conflict--so--on the way to the boat, "The Object

of Value" might be captured/destroyed, so the target is the men carrying same.  Once on the boat,

object is most certainly lost, so the point of conflict becomes "sending a message"/signalling,

in other words--in this case, the signal is to "raise the price/cost" of moving the object,

and exact retribution.  But retribution, WITHIN LIMITS, same as modern warfare.  Killing

the boat is a big deal.  Understand that the opposition would be virtually certain that

extra measures would be offshore ( as they are ) to make sure that the object of value

is safe.  (And no party here wants an international incident).  So. Very much the same as conflict

between super powers, where all out war means nukes, what we have left is "signalling/

posturing."  Not very satisfying if you happen to be a casualty.  But nevertheless, that is

where we are.  So, continuing, the target would still be the men on shore.  You will find this language buried in Injured.  Read from "pitiful puppet Presidents" down to "Better to let Billy

and his men die.  As long as they got The Bitch away."  That might help clarify the setting,

background, stakes.  Also note that as soon as the boat returns, it becomes a valid target,

just a very difficult one.  The boat/Gretzky raised the stakes.  Gretzky to save his men,

the opposition to suppress an escalating threat.  You can bet Gretzky caught a barn full

of shit for going back for his men, and you can bet Gretzky could care less, had a beer, and

scuttled the boat of the coast of Sardinia.

GENERAL NOTE: much thanks to those of you who find search phrase:
'DCBourone Kindle Single Injured Reserves'
To those of you who are new here, or lurking, Injured Reserves is a kind

of moral bible of the Gehr Family, and a key reference between and amongst

all who live in the Gehriverse. Injured was written by a member of the Gehr

Family, who will make himself known in later books.
"Combat is the control of your adversary in the three dimensions of space,

across the fourth dimension, of time...." search (Kindle Single Injured Reserves)

Thank you, DesignatedMarksman.
Ok, back to work.

I was responding (badly) to your comments...

Right now the text is at 124,000 words, or almost 500 pages by Amazon e-book layout. The last 4-6000 words will not appear on this site. Everything is pirated at some point, including texts as obscure as Injured Reserves, but I cannot afford to make it easy. Will post new information as it becomes available."

I was merely trying to verbalize my desire to buy your book.

If you're getting close you probably ought to send me a file or two.

DC,

I'm back from travels and back to your story, nice update on your latest posting, sorry for the troubles in your way.

I took the time since returning to run back through the story to refresh myself  and dip the subconsciousness into your stream of thought (after all subconscious communication is older than any human language). I also read again your brilliant "injured Reserves", the prose that hones the razor's edge of this tale.

Have you ever heard the phrase "The Yarragh"?

The term was invented by the great Irish Papal Count John McCormack to reference occasions when a voice can break through the normal boundaries and limitations of direct human communication.

William Butler Yeats, once wrote about the “Yarragh.” he explained it as the "Yarragh" was a cry of and from the heart, a haunting and haunted sound that could be found in Celtic (and particularly Irish) song and poetry. It was sorrow and lamentation for what had been lost, it was anger and self-righteousnessness, it was the truest expression of a soul.

Listen to Van Morrison's deepest works and you can glimpse it off on the horizon of a darkening sea.

Anyway, you have the gift the "Yarragh", is it lonely?
