The Day The Dollar Died...short story in .pdf on the internet, about 170 pages maybe.

I've read One Second After, Alas Babylon, and several others. The Day The Dollar Died is freaking scary. Probably not realistic as to how quickly things might happen.

Also if you are in NC there is some sort of preppers seminar thing I saw advertised at a resort or hotel in Black Mountain, think it was May 4th and 5th maybe. The guy that wrote One Second After is one of the speakers.

That's pretty good. And not far from the truth.
I read the book/saw the movie. Depressing as all hell, but still good.

Plus another vote for OSA. Light's Out is my favorite, but OSA's got a poignant thread related to diabetes that really makes SHTF survival hit home.
Both books are "must-reads".

My wife loved Lights Out. She bugs me about prepping now.

Jericho- Ok. not a movie, but it is on DVD now. We really enjoyed the series. Maybe a nuclear attack isn't top of your SHTF list, but it was still a pretty decent show.

I just finished that book yesterday. I really enjoyed it. It wasn't much of a "gun lover's" book, and the beginning was a bit slow as they spent quite a bit of time on character development. But the story does seem somewhat plausible, especially in the sense that it is possible for things to turn to shit in less than a week, especially when people are geographically isolated. I think it would make an excellent TV mini-series. A variety of characters are presented - politicians, accountants, postal workers, millionaire playboys, astronauts, doctors, geeks, ranchers, religious zealots, rogues, socialites...

As I've read more SHTF/TEOTWAWKI fiction, I have come to the realization that it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to survive on your own. Banding together with like-minded people is crucial. You might be able to live like cro-magnon man on your own or with a wife and child - bare subsistence. To even live like a peasant of the Middle Ages, you'll need a group - a society - with (semi-)professional soldiers, farmers, blacksmiths, carpenters, etc.

I've also finished Apocalypse Law 1 & 2. The threat of roving bands of thugs seems very, VERY real. Especially those with access to vehicles and weapons.


OP - Rent "The Road". And don't tell her that "ZOMG! We need to buy a ranch in Wyoming and buy 10,000 gallon tanks of water and guns and ammo and knives and grain mills and mylar bags and Mountain House food TOMORROW!!!!" I don't know what your idea of SHTF is, but I do know that you'll need to make baby steps to prepare for it.

I want to say "The Road", but it might actually be too effective. That movie can be so overwhelming that it makes folks give up before they even start. If you already have the prepper mindset begun though––- I can't think of a better motivator. I know it sure lights a fire under my ass when I watch it. The wife too. We've rewatched it a couple times, and every time it makes me want to redouble my efforts even when I can't afford to.LOL!!!

I got her to watch Panic Room, thanks for that! She was hanging off the end of the couch . Ill have her watch The Road next.

Sadly she isnt really a reader, I tried to get her to read Patriots by Rawles...I think she got two pages in. Unless Sparks writes a TEOTWAWKI book I dont think I'll ever get her to read it.

Man Woman Wild. There's simple and practical stuff like starting fires and making shelter and women won't get bored with it because there's a girl and boring girl guy stuff. The girl is pretty game for trying stuff and even though she freaks out and whines sometimes she tries, which is the important thing.
