Thats also what I am doing.  Finding the info and then printing it off.  
The links won't do you any good when the power goes out.

Anything from the Engineering Branch first, I feel.  The DoD SERE manual is a freaking joke, I wouldn't waste the five bucks or the printer ink and paper on it.  

If you are worried about runnin' and gunnin', then get the Marksmanship FM, and 7-8 on the Infantry Rifle Platoon, as a bare minimum.  7-8 won't be strictly applicable in a "survivalist" view, since you're not likely to have a full rifle platoon, let alone a company or battalion (7-10), but you gotta know how to fight conventional before you can fight effectively unconventional.  If you can find them, the SMs and STPS for 11 series, and 18 series would be a God-send to have, sicne they've got every individual skill that an infantry man or a special forces soldier is expected to know described, in pretty good detail.

Really though, I'd look for the engineering ones first, since chances are, the runnin' and gunnin' part is probably gonna be a lot less common than the need to build shitters and bridges.  

Additionally, the combat lifesaver FM would be a good investment, as well as any medical corps FMs and STPs.

Sorry, since they went to the new decimal system, I don't know FM numbers anymore.

By old school manuals, I've downloaded a manual for Army cooks from the 1890s which looked to have applications for cooking with storage foods for large groups in the field, a field fortification manual that describes how to wind your own concertinas out of barbed wire, and marksmanship manuals for the Springfield '03, and Garand that go into much detail about range estimation,  estimating wind, mirage, and leading moving targets, as well as target detection and engagement, a US translation of a German WW2 manual on cold weather survival and fighting that goes into a lot of detail on field expedient shelters, and fortifications and such, and much much more.

anyone know, on the html files for example how to save a complete copy of them.  For exampl on the golbalsecurity page, they have a lot of html files, and I would like to have copies saved on my end.  Is there a convienient way to do this?

have not tried to find many manuals but scribd.com always has a good selection of free material to read. anybody thats into free knowledge should check it out...its has helped me a bunch.

There is some random useful stuff on here as well.  They have videos and you can download the PDF files as well.  You have to be a member to use the PDFs but its free and quick to sign up.

From there start doing your search for the various manuals you are searching for. I agree on the Engineer Manuals. If something ever does happen someone wil have to have these skills to help rebuild. And one more point. A lawyers skills won't be worth a damn until after things recover, but knowing how to rebuild the infrastructure you will have skills to barter.

Good GOD, information overload!  I love to read, but GOD.  I think I'll burn a bunch of this stuff to CD and try to print it off somewhere else for free.  You'd wear a printer out printing a bunch of this stuff out.  Gotta have the information though.

I have recently realized that just about everything I ever needed to know about getting around and being comfortable and self reliant I learned from the BSA Fieldbook (albeit a much older edition than the one pictured here)

It's my recollection that the 1967 printing (dark green cover with backpackers) was the best, and the later versions were neutered.  Can anyone confirm?

I have not had an opportunity to check out a late edition but I still have 2 copies of my late 60s edition.  It was all testosterone and macho stuff, if I remember correctly it even had marksmanship "THE HORROR!"  I will pull them out and scan for some of the best vintage material.

Bump for THE HORROR!!!!  (even though it is stickied.....)  I was checking through my 1970 printing, and I didn't see any marksmanship.  I'll take another look tonight.

i don't know if anybody's mentioned it but www.theepicenter.com is another good site. just click on information tab in the main page an it will take you to "tip o'da week" they have alot of info on energy, everything from solar power to building your own homemade genny's an charts on figuring out how much power you will need based on what all you wanna run.  i first heard of in in the book Deep Winter

Most of the stuff you'll find used isn't the current version of the manual. Most of the major manuals have been revised in the last 4-5 years.

Doesn't mean the info is bad, just not the current manual.

I'm getting ready to toss a bunch of my old manuals because I'm retiring from the Guard. The unit wont even take themback  because they are old versions.

So I had an idea and wanted to pass it by the hive.  I have an older Kindle.  I was thinking of wiping it clean and loading a bunch of .pdf files from this thread
an the FM links.  I was then thinking of putting it in my trash can Faraday cage with my other EMP preps.  I am contemplated "Nesting" my critical electronics.

I am doing something similar. I have an off-brand electronic reader that can read pdf and doc files, as well as multiple image, audio, and video formats. It also has a micro SD port. I cleaned out the storage space in the reader and I am slowly collecting and loading important reference guides, as well as other documents and references that are more specific to me. These files are backed up on the micro SD card so that the information can be physically transferred to a new device if necessary.

It is important to remember that information loaded into an electronic device doesn't equal practical skills. You don't want to wait until a loved one is going into shock to fire up the Kindle and browse through an Army field manual on first aid. On the other hand, I'd rather have the information and not need it than need it and not have it. Since you already have the reader, go for it.

If you want to jump in on the external drive thats making the rounds, drop me a POM with a snail mail address. I would only ask that you send along any useful files you might have that aren't already on the drive when it gets to you.

Regarding hard copies  Field Manuals...

I am wrapping up a  divorce/ house purchase/ moving process.
part of that process has been clearing out a  couple rows of FMs that accumulated over my 22 years in the Guard and that didn't get tossed after I retired.
They didn't get returned to the unit because they were older copies of FMs even at that time, let alone now a few years later
They date primarily from the 80s and 90s, with a few from the early oughts
Most skew towards Infantry topics since I was 11 series, although theres a few that are not Infantry specific.
The list is too long to post, but I hate to see these things just go to the recyclers if there is someone out there that might want them
Given that most of us have more modern versions of these manuals on thumbdrives/ hard drives etc, are any of you looking for or interested in hard copies of manuals?
