I just drew out for the west desert unit in southern utah for elk and am planning on taking my .308. I was just wondering what brand and weight i should use.

I live and hunt in Colorado. I've killed elk with 180gr Barnes TSX bullets. Worked great and did the job. I'm going to hunt this year with 7mm Rem Mag. using 160gr  Nolser partition. I would suggest getting any quality bullet in 180 gr for .308.

I prefer bonded bullets for elk. My choice is usually always nosler accubonds.

Try the bonded and monolithic bullets 150gr and up from any of the main manufacturers and see what your rifle likes best.

I am looking at these168 Barnes

My wife drew an elk rage with me this year. She shoots a Savage .308 youth rifle.

+1. My Kimber loves 165 AB's and critters hate them.

I run the barns 168 in mine, have not got to test it yet though.

My top two choices would be the Barnes 168 or the Accubond 165. Both are excellent bullets.

Any thoughts on the Berger VLD hunting bullets?

I have never loaded them. I was going to try them in my 25-06 but the Accubonds shoot so well I am not going any further.

Try them and let us know! I have a 300 H&H I need to work up...

I have not used them on game, only paper... and they were extremely accurate once I found the right seating depth.  For elk, I like to have mass and penetration.  The Bergers are from the fragmentation/energy dump camp.  I know people use them and say they are great, so even though I prefer penetration (in case I encounter odd angle shots) since I have not used the Bergers in the field I can't concretely comment on their effectiveness.  However, my concern with them is the odd angle shot.  I'm sure perfect broadside, they do serious damage.  But what if the elk quartering away from you and its the only shot you have? I like the confidence of bone smashing, weight retaining, penetrating bullets. I used 180gr Hornady Interlocks for my last elk in my 30-06.  I happen to get a broadside shot, and hit high shoulder.  The bullet had complete penetration with about a 1" exit and liquified most of the lungs on its way through.

This.  180gr.  Very accurate in my Rem700.  I use the same bullet in my 300 WSM.
