THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
So I love hunting with my 223, but am looking to go bigger (300 rsaum). I am perfectly legal to hunt with it in SD and even a suppressor. Here is the question. Can I take it Elk hunting in all states? Moose and Caribou up north? What states or Canada are they not legal in?

I had this discussion with a buddy of mine and all we could think of is CA, but maybe there are more.

What do you know folks?

Most states have both a caliber and a magazine restriction for large game.

You're probably looking at .243 minimum on caliber, and the mag must be blocked to hold no more than five rounds in most states.

In practical terms, that means you can use your AR with a .300blk or 7.62x39 upper on it to meet caliber restrictions, and then block the mag to hold no more than five rounds.

Alaska is any centerfire rifle and no magazine restrictions. Wyoming and I'm sure many others do not allow calibers under 243.
ETA just because you can do something does not mean its prudent to do so.

MT has no mag or calibre restriction.

You'll need to verify with your states laws and regs.

As a previous poster put, many states require a MINIMUM .243(6mm) bullet, as well as barrel length and MINIMUM ft lbs. of energy as well, such as here in CO.

In Minnesota, they allow anything larger than .220, so .223(5.56) qualifies as legal to hunt with. MN also has no mag restrictions, so you could carry a full 30 round mag in the field, although I don't, I'll usually carry a 20rd. Pmag loaded with up to 10 rounds.

Do your homework before you choose to bring an AR into the field for hunting. The last thing you need is a Wildlife Officer stopping you to confiscate your gun and writing you a citation with a large fine attached.

Georgia is 22? caliber center fire with no magazine restrictions (5.7mm is legal). Virginia is 23 caliber with 5 round max in the magazine.

I personally wouldn't use anything under a 243 for deer and nothing under a long action or magnum 7mm for Elk. As someone said earlier, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Idaho has no magazine restrictions, centerfire for big game, and your weapon cannot weigh more than 16 lbs.
