Get in shape best to hook up with someone thats done it till you learn the ropes. I will admit my first time (1998) I was green horn as could be. We studied everything the entire year had our spot picked out turns out we didnt know shit about starved and froze to death lol. First spot sucked over ran with hunter second over ran with guides and ATV's our 3rd and last spot picked out turned into the place to be. You just cant imagine what your getting into till your there.

Get into the best shape you can.
Learn how to build a fire under any conditions. Practice it every day in your backyard. It may save your life. Learn to shoot on your hind legs. Use a reasonably heavy, tough bullet for caliber. Be prepared to kill an elk every second that you are out there hunting them. Sometimes that's all the time they give you, especially in black timber. Go with somebody who has been there before if at all possible. That can shortcut a couple years off your learning curve. |
