I've got too much wood to split by hand, and not enough time to do all of it.

Which kind of splitter should I build?

Auger or Hydraulic Ram? The Auger is cheapest, and probably marginally safer, since I don't have to worry about high speed infusions of hydraulic oil into my body. But, it will take an arm, leg, hand, and twist it up like twine.

I plan on doing that one, if I go with the auger/cone design. No way in hell I'm going to put it on a vehicle. Probably going to do a gas engine though, since I've got a 6HP engine sitting in the shop.

Potentially... It appears to be in Europe though.

I've got one of these designs in my head, but with gas, not electric:

The cone splitter will only work on certain types of wood.  If it's twisted an knarly then the cones have a hard time.  They work good on clean straight grain woods that split well with an axe.

That's what I was wondering. Oh well. Nevermind then.

I may pick this thing up tomorrow off CraigsList:

Guy wants $350 for it. I'll see if he'll take $200, with a target of $250-300.

LOL...no.

What do you do with large logs that are 20" long and 18" or more in diameter?

Hydraulic.  Safer by a long shot.

Yep.

I'm considering this one:
http://dirtyhandtools.com/22-Ton%20Web%20Page.html.

I'd get it from lowes, and use my ID card, so I get -10% to cover sales tax.

Specs online say the bypass is 3500PSI, with a  4" piston the cycle time should be something like 6.7s with a 13gpm pump, and tonnage is right around 21.99t. So, their published specs are pretty close to correct, even if they're rounded up for consumer ease.

Hydraulic ram with its own cut off saw, and conveyer belt.  Logs in firewood out.

"Nice machine. In Thailand that beautiful log will never been cut and used that way."

"Yeah, It would be used to make crates and skids to send stuff to the US that will break the first time you try to use it."

The wood in both of those videos is so small and straight-grained, that looks way more cumbersome and time-consuming than just using a splitting ax.
