I know...

You know I have never seen an animal puke up a lung.  It was the damnedest thing.  I shot it with the suppressed 416 with m193.
He ran for about 30 yds over the bluff, and I followed the impressive blood trail.  He was leaking pretty bad

Down in the creek I found him with a frigging lung laying beside him.  Tripped me out.

Sounds like we are missing a part of this adventure.

TRG, get your ass back in here brother!  We have projects to discuss. Took this pic at a roadside sale just for you:

I was going to buy it and send it your way but he wanted 500 bucks for it.  You'd have to live closer to me to work that debt off.

Alright, my FIL picked up this bush hog for 500 dollars.  I forgot to take pics of it before we worked on it.  It is the heaviest duty one I have seen.  1/2 " plate steel 3 inch tubing etc.  It is solid as a rock. I don't think you could get into this cutter for less than 1500 new now.

I had to go pick it up so I hauled my tractor there and hooked it up.  Judging by how my machine responded with it on its back end, I'd guess it weighs in at over 800 lbs.

After getting it back, I broke out the grinder with wire brush and went through 3 of those knocking the surface rust/oxidation and dirt off it.

Here it is 6 rattle cans later good as new:

We took off the slip clutch and PTO spindle and are going to go through those and refurb as needed.  He has an old cutter with a slip clutch and I will take that off and put on mine as it has a sheer pin setup currently.

Ha!

On a side not we are now officially in the quail raising business.  Our first shipment of eggs was damaged by usps but we plan to get 10 hatched it looks like.

Our replacement shipment of 100 will be coming soon.

Cool!  What kind?  My dad used to raise pharaoh and bobwhites.  Talk about some good eating!

The eggs are the perfect size for pickling.  I don't know if you've ever heard of scotch eggs, but they are nice to use for those too.

Jumbo Coturnix

Wife picked these due to ease of keeping, efficient feed conversion, early maturity and egg/meat production.

In other words, more bang for our buck.

She drove the research on this, I just built the brooder and grow out pen (pics to follow).

Breeder hutches are still on paper at this point.

We used the old coop that was at the rear of my run in shed attached to the shop/barn.  It is just a 2x4 chicken wire enclosure with a rear wall and door. It is enclosed on three sides.

I raked the gravel bottom out and put hardware cloth to enclose it. No digging will be allowed by predators.

Framed it up with a partition.

Here is a dry fit pic of the top.  It has been taken out so we can paint it and install the hinged hardware cloth lid for ease of cleaning.

Quail are hatched.  In the top box under a heat lamp now.

Lights will be added to the bottom box below (grow out pen).  We have two sides on this one.

This gives a perspective of how we can access the different areas.

One thing you can do this year is start tracking that... make yourself a sketch of the clearing including the garden spot, and print off a bunch of copies.  Once a week or so go out mid-day and draw in the areas the sun is hitting, and where it isn't.  That changes a lot over the course of a year, as the sun moves around in the sky and leaf cover comes and goes.  If you get serious about the gardening, you can use this history to help choose what to plant where, and when.

I myself just do the equinoxes and solstices at 1 hr before after sunset and sunrise and noon (adjusting for daylight savings time).

I also picked up this old rusted out spreader for free from a buddy who had replaced it last year.  After many hours with a grinder, epoxy to seal holes and motor oil (don't ask), I finally got the discs free so the spreading mechanism works properly.  Works good as new, he even tossed in the pto shaft.

I don't have the money to afford JD equipment but I had a few cans of green paint lying around the shop.  Not bad for a couple of afternoons work.  This is an Italian aggrex brand that retails for 675 dollars at everything attachments.  Total cost: less than 20 dollars in materials.

Thanks, we love it.  We have 10 and are working on another 10 right now.  We have a pistol range and 22, no rifle due to the layout.
We do back up to .gov owned wilderness so it like we own thousands of acres

Well, I planted the seeds today.

Garden size has been decreased to about a 25x30 ish sized plot.  It is fenced to keep the chickens out this year.  I also have a smaller fenced spot that is about 25x15 that I planted overflow squash and carrots in.  It has a bit of shade, so this will be an experiment.  I don't know how it will turn out.

I plan on doing the tomatoes on fence panels again this year. That worked well last year.  I just decreased it from 96 linear feet to 48.  I have about 18 ( i think) zucchini plants and 16 squash plants.  I put in about 10 cucumber mounds along a fence to let it grow up it.

I also planted 2 rows of carrots, and I know absolutely nothing about growing these.  The rows are about 20 ft long.

I also put in about 7 rows of corn and beans but this isn't fenced and I just did it to try and grow corn again.  I have failed each time I attempt it.  This was just to see some green grass growing in the woods

really no need for pics at this point, as I did not plant any plants as I am holding off on the peppers and tomatoes for another couple of weeks.  Work has been nuts and I have a boy coming by June.  The way this year is going, we may not process any of the food by canning, just pick and use what we can eat, and give the rest away or feed it to the chickens.

Well, guys no updates just a little story.

I bought this tractor about 2.7 years ago and financed it

Knowing what I know now, I should have searched around and bought a good used machine, but since it was my first tractor I wanted a warranty.

I paid about 1.1k (1.9%) in interest over the last 3 years and I decided to pay it off 2 years early by cutting a check today.

Its not much, but its mine.  It was a package deal with a trailer, bush hog, box blade and chains and binders.  Every time I used one of those chains it bugged me that I didn't really own it.

I wonder if it will drive differently Sunday when I go till 5 acres for our sunflower patch for dove hunting this fall.

Anyway, just wanted to share the news that casa HKH doesn't have a loan on a piece of equipment any longer.

That my friend is a good machine.  Wish I had done something like that, even though i haven't had any issues out of my machine yet.

Well, we worked my buddies place last week.  Tilled and planted about 5 acres total in sunflowers.

I was tilling and took this pick of them planting.  We had 3 tractors going, one spraying pre-emergent, me tilling and one other planting.

working the disced ground.

The planter we used is older than the dude driving the tractor  old steel wheels and all. wished i would have gotten an close up shot of it.

It was a good day on the tractor.  Spent about 8 hours total seat time.

Used is the way to go on compact tractors these days.  The price on new ones is .

I'm keeping my eye out for a good used 2000-2006 New Holland TC40.

Nice!  That reminds me I need to get mine planted for dove hunting this year.

8 hours on an open station tractor sucks.  Reminds me of the summers I did custom hay.  Now days it's all in a cab, heat, AC, active seat for a smooth ride, hydraulic A arm front end, Bluetooth stereo to stream Pandora through my iPhone.  Rough life

That 8275R rides another than my F-250!

Well,

no pics or anything exciting like that but the garden is finally fully in.

Condensed it down due to my sons impending arrival (less than 3 weeks).

I planted 16 better boys, 8 varieties of cherry tomato, 4 jalepeno', 8 banana pepper, and 12 bell peppers.  I also planted about 5 pods of cuke, 8 zuke, and 16 squash.  These are not all coming up from seed, I have about 2/3 of these out of the ground.

I also put in 7 rows of corn for the heck of it, and 5 smaller rows of beans.

today my FIL shows up with 19 of the BIG tomato plants he got for free.  These things already have flowers on them and are over 2 ft tall.  I put them in too

The corn and beans are out of the ground and looking ok this early, but my pepper plants were so small, it will be awhile on those.

Yes, It is not nearly as immaculate as last year with staked rows etc.  It is definitely more 'hodge podge'

I actually went out today as I found some squash seeds from 2 years ago in the deep freezer.  I don't know if they will germinate, but I dropped in about 20 more mounds around the perimeter of the garden

I also made a surprise deposit in the wife's rose bed and in the circular flower bed that my drive goes around.  Hey I like yellow flowers, what can I say
