with that much gutter that tote should fill in a afternoon
now go find 4 or 5 more to tie into it
you have anything on the end of that pipe to filter junk out of the gutter water?
my gutters pick up a incredible amount of junk
you know all those single socks your dryer spits out? I zip tie them on the end for filters
ghetto... but works perfect
ETA: should have read my reply from back then
same ghetto sock recommendation

one thing I have heard about but not experienced is that the totes plastic degrades in the sun
mine are in the shade of a big tree and I haven't seen this happen. Might consider some cover for it

Not much above the house in this area.
We're getting a rate of 10gals per .10 inch of rain.
We have the big crap catcher at the top of the downspout, a fine mesh metal screen on the opening of the tank and a filter for the water wand.
The tank is in the shade most of the day.

Again thanks for the help and glad to see you back in the garden forum.

Well the garden is coming along pretty good. We've had a few problems with the weather, cold snaps, rain and cloudy skies.
That killed the sugar snaps and stunted the blue lakes bad. Going to replant both. Okra is a little slow also.

Strawberries and melons.

Peppers, spinach, squash, zukes and cukes.

Cukes climbing the trellis for bcauz3y.

Squash

Kentucky wonders and snake beans.

Corn

Purple hulls and the sad blue lakes.

Tomatoes, basil, dill, parsley and some weeds that need to be pulled.

Tomatoes, carrots and swiss chard.

More tomatoes, sweet potatoes and red lasoda potatoes.

Cherokee purple.

Since you weigh out your harvest, did you keep a running tally of the total harvest weight last year?  I'd be curious to know quantitatively what kind of production you manage to get our of your garden.

Yes but I didn't add up last years crop. When I get the chance I'll tally it up and post it.

Did you use 100% supersoil in the raised beds or a mix of topsoil and supersoil?

Any problems using the deck boards for the sides?

100% supersoil. We add our compost and/or garden soil from Lowes as needed. The supersoil is a blend that my local supplier makes to order and I forgot what all they put in it.

I used the 5/4 deck boards because I had extra from building our deck and I was unsure if the area was good for a garden.
I wouldn't recommend them although they have held up well. I suggest 2"x 6"s or 2"x 12"s. They hold up great and there is
no issues with bowing( biggest problem with 5/4 boards). If you want a permanent buy once cry once setup go with cinder blocks.

Nice looking harvest!  How does the herb hanging work for you?  I tried it in the garage once and the leaves fell off all over the place.  Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Wal-Mart had strawberries on sale for 75 cents a pound.

Bought 8lbs and learned to make preserves.  Added a dash of cinnamon and salt ... unbelievable.

Good to see your garden is once again genning a steady supply.

To continue a conversation about your water catchment and pumping system...

With your battery AH and the pump draw ... you have only 30 minutes and 90 gallons of pump power.

With your PVC system, why not raise the tanks and go with static (gravity fed) pressure?

I gave the wife the ten foot box for her strawberries this year. She had one in a pot on the deck for two years
and I thought I'd give up some room for one of her favorite plants.

Going to need a recipe for that.

Thanks. Little rough this year with the weather but it's chugging along.

The tank is slightly higher than the garden. I was hoping it would have enough gravity pressure to work but once
I put on the 100' hose it turned into a trickle.
I only use it to hand water the garden. I think it should do the job but if it doesn't will adding a second battery work?
The panel is a 10ah if that helps.

I liked this recipe because it is scalable based upon the weight of your strawberries.  Simple ratio so you can adjust as needed.

Had 8lbs of strawberries.  I added a sprinkle of salt, cinnamon, few drops of vanilla and a 1/2 tsp of Allspice.

Made a very good preserve.

Ingredients:
Strawberries, cleaned & hulled
Cane sugar
Lemon juice

Directions:
Weigh your strawberries, take half the weight of the strawberries and use as your sugar measurement. Use as many ounces of lemon juice as you used pounds of sugar. For example, for 10 lbs strawberries, use 5 lbs sugar, and 5 oz. lemon juice.

Add all the ingredients to a pot and allow to boil until product has risen and fallen. Use a metal spoon to test for doneness; if preserve mixture drips off in a sheet, then it’s ready to jar.

On your irrigation system ... When I worked for the VFD i became a certified Driver/Operator.  Had to take a class on flow and pressure for fire hoses.

The diameter of the hose makes a tremendous difference on flow rates.  Your water hose is almost as bad as it gets for back pressure.  Water has to be pushed very hard to flow through it.

If you want volume from a garden hose it takes a lot of pressure to overcome the friction of the hose against the water molecules.  My Beaver using a PTO pump at 1000 RPM and 17 HP ... it was about 8 gpm at 150' through a water hose.

I stopped using  Beaver and bought a 5 hp Honda pump.  Via a 2.5" line I push water 200' at a rate of 75 gallons per minute.

Almost 10 times the volume with 1/3 of the HP.

The difference is the hose diameter.  The water is not being 'squeezed' through the hose.

If you want to use gravity, consider hitting Amazon and getting a 2.5" poly line.  TSC sells them, but they are over 1.00 per foot.
