I have heard that your better off to use irrigation type watering this late in the season as using a sprinkler can cause problems (fungal or bacterial) by wetting the leaves frequently.
Is this true?
I've also heard that you should water in the morning as that reduces some of those risks.

Drip systems also prevent splashing of the soil onto the leaves which can spread pathogens.
Early morning is best as it reduces evaporation, allows a good deep soak and won't burn the leaves via sun through water droplets.
If you have irrigation set up then at night is ok. Wetting the soil isn't like wetting the foliage.

As much rain as I've had lately, watering is the least of my problems My garden is on the home stretch anyways. The drought in June, followed by all this rain has everything all fucked up
