THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I have a tendency to over engineer everything. I have a fear of loosing jars of food due to shelf failure (saw my grandmother loose two years worth). So I decided that 3/4" ply would do the trick. It could be made from scrap, but all of mine has been used up lately, so a trip to lowes was in order. Anyway this thing will hold about 250 quarts and pints mixed. I have two shelves for pint sized jars, and the open top for what ever... I dado cut the sides for strength....
It took both of us to get all of the shelves in the right datos.....
Here is it finished and almost full..... I told her it wouldn't be enough... haha
It ain't fancy, but it works. I did fancy up the trim a bit, but you can't really tell from the pics. |

Very nice, and a lot of storage in a small space. Design keeps most of the jars in the dark, which is good.
I need to do something like that for my utility room. |

Good job. I need to do the same thing at my place. Did you glue the shelves in(for added strength)?

.....I have a GREAT husband...... And he was right about us being able to fill it up!
Gdawg- yep everything was glued and nailed. It was finished with Danish oil- we combined a half can of dark walnut and a half can of natural and I think it turned out perfect - husband used his air gun to apply. |

I did glue the shelves, and everything involved with titebond II, and used finishing nails. First time for that with a piece of furniture. I used to use a brad nailer to hold stuff in place till the glue dried, but I thought I'd try both, just looks old school.
I didn't think about light getting to the jars untill we had the thing set in place. Now that I have seen the sunlight on it, I was thinking that doors like a pie safe would be ok looking.... |
