Nice work. Trust me, the weeds will attack in full force once it rains. It's just been too dry for the seeds to germinate.

I've only had two brief downpours since my stuff was planted. I've had to pull a few little weeds, but no big troubles yet ![]() |

Ya see, this is one of the many reasons I usually don't grow corn. Went to the gas station and back, 10 minutes and the crows were in it. |

More damn varmints. The old lab found a nest of bunnies in the garlic patch.
Tater flowers. Broccoli picking time. I've got 34 plants in all, but these are the first ones ready. Early cabbage heading up. |

I ran the cultivator through the garden yesterday. In places, the weeds were thick enough that the caused the cultivator to clog and stop pulling/cutting weeds. Good news is, once I kill all the weeds, the drought will lift the topsoil and I'll get dust as my reward.

Part of tonight's dinner along with some fresh garlic out of the garden. This is pretty much going to be my take on a Polish Haluski. Bacon, cabbage, onion, garlic and egg noodles. |

You know what. That sounds like some pretty darn good Yankee food. I am impressed. I am used to seeing pictures of gray pork pie.

Just for shits and giggles, I X'd the stalk on the base of the cabbage I just cut. Webbernets rumor is that they will form five smaller heads (these being spring cabbages). Personally, I think it's bullshit and I normally pull roots and all as soon as I cut them. But, what the hell, I'm all for experimenting with one plant. |

( I am neither), but it's damn good. Take a pound of bacon, chop it up, saute until about 1/2 of the fat is rendered. Add two large chopped onions and saute until clear. Toss in as much chopped garlic as you dare. Cook down a bit more, remove from pan. Add one whole chopped cabbage to a hot cast iron frying pan (with all the bacon grease) and sweat it down by 3/4 with some salt and pepper. Add the bacon/onion/garlic back into it. Then toss the whole mess into your cooked egg noodles and give it a good stir. Eat, fart, repeat. |

Jarhead_22 taught me how to make 'pikleze' last summer with my extra cabbage. Might be something for you to try. I have a one gallon jar of pikleze in my pantry now. Great on sammiches.

Hopefully we'll have enough for lots of kraut. |

The head I cut today was right about 3 lbs. I'll probably let them go another week before making Kraut after seeing what it weighed. Nice and solid though. I've got a bunch of late Dutch Flats in too. 100 days for them, so they're a fall cabbage for here. Cole type stuff grows extremely well here. Grow what works, forget the rest. |

I dug the few soft neck Susanvilles that survived today. Second year of failure for those, so no more. Sticking to all hard necks from now on. Those are doing great, but it will be another week or three before harvest for those. |
