Despite the crappy weather, we got some work done today.

Got the first half of the floor cut and put in.

Got the coop door mounted on the hinges.

Second half of the floor put into place.

And built the door, just waiting to tack a few things up on it and get it in place.

Thank you. Not too sure on the cost yet, I'll try to get a list together and see.

Have a question for you garden experts.

On the squash and the tomatoes, which are in seperate beds, some of the leaves are turning from green to yellow.

Any ideas?

That looks like a mineral deficiency. I would guess either iron or magnesium. What is your soil pH? More on deficiencies.

FWIW, those leaves look like they went from 'really happy' to sick.

What have you done differently? Added fertilizer? Water?

about your coop...I was visiting with my neighbor the other day. His coop gets more moisture than mine and he has more chickens in a smaller space.

It was 'gag a maggot' bad with the smell.

My coop is downwind of my house and I have never smelled mine from the house. Best of luck on yours.

Thanks guys, think I may have found the issue. My dad had sprayed a few days ago and i'm guessing some of it blew onto the plants.

We will probably end of moving it once its finished. We still have some framing to add that will make it easier to move.

Did some more work today.

Finished up the door, got it mounted and got the final 2 pieces on the outside coop walls. It is now completely secure from the outside, except the roof and a small part above the door.

How safe would they be staying inside it during the day only? Would a hawk come through the roof in its current state?

if the roof is open possums , hawks and coons can get through it... if you dont have weasels that is.

You and I have the same door. Same design, same hinges, same latch, same 1/2 inch hardware cloth. I just put the corner brackets on the inside, and you need to go back to Home Depot and buy the handle!

Put the roof on the coop today...

The color isn't black, it is a dark brown/gray.

Just a quick update: got the outside secured for now so the chickens are staying out tonight for the first time! Will report back in the morning, hopefully with good news.

Whenever you decide to move it, I would recommend that you add a 1-2' perimeter wire that prevents skunks from digging in to the coop.

Also, the hens are voracious diggers. They will begin to scratch their way to the outside, this encourages skunks and possums to invade.

Garden update:

Tomatoes before

As of today

Squash before

Today

Squash are loaded, tons of small and new blooms. We've picked about 20 in the past 5 days.

Chickens are still staying outside and doing great!

Thank you!

Have a question for you experts. On a late batch of squash that I planted there is a weird color on the leaves. These were grown from seeds.

Yes I know they are WAY too close, but I grew them from seeds and didn't think that they would all sprout, but I was wrong. Didn't want to waste them.

Any ideas?

We went ahead and pruned back the blackberries today.

The majority weren't producing much, but we did leave one that still has fruit.

A couple sets of primocanes coming up.

A few haven't started putting up any primocanes yet, but they should soon.

Garden is going good. Tomatoes are all loaded but none have ripened yet.

Lost one squash to what we think was root rot. Not a big deal since we have been averaging 5-10 squash per day. They've started to slow down some now.

Chickens are doing great also! They have been in the coop a couple weeks and they love it. They come out to free range around 3 hours a day usually.

Much bigger than they use to be!!

Check those squash plants very very carefully for stinkbugs and vine borers.

Looks/acts exactly like mine did last year. It was bugs, not disease that killed my plants.

Ok, will do. Haven't noticed any yet though. Hopefully it will just be that one plant.
