1 Missed!
Suckers are digging dens right next to my basement!
Killed a little one last week, 5.56 Federal works wonders, but missed a big sucker next to the house today.
Anybody got any ideas on how to use poison, and what kind on these suckers? I rarely see them, but I have seen the great amount of damage they do. |

I use a suppressed 10/22 with CCI HP subs. Haven't missed or lost one yet, but I've only got about 40-50yd to cover.

Dunno about groundhogs, but I've heard of excellent success on gophers using a VERY old car, and a metal dryer vent hose from the tailpipe to the burrow. Monoxide does the trick.

Die Varmits!
I've had them around my house for years, finally discovered they had dug all the way under my two car garage last year, from side to the other. I decided to wipe them out after that and the .22 lr has been my weapon of choice. There's a clover patch in the back yard they like to munch on in the morning and at dusk. If I see them out there I take the shot, about 75 yards away and I'm 6-1 so far (finally missed one last weekend). I think they roam and if they find empty dens (left by the previously killed occupants) they just move in. I never see more than one at a time but they seem to keep showing up. Unfortunately there's a 100 acres of cow pasture (that isn't mine) behind my house so getting all the dens is impossible. I saw a pretty cool tool on the www for gassing the dens that you could make yourself. If you can get a lawn mower or ATV or something to them just rig a fitting over the exhaust so you can pipe the exhaust into a hose, put the hose in the hole and pack dirt around it and give them a good 30 minute gassing. Pretty sure thety sell the pre made kit at ACE hardware for about $20 bucks. ![]() ![]() |

Okay, folks.
Suggestions for marmot-cide without guns? I'm in a blue state and in an area of tiny yards. As far as I can tell, suppressors are not legal here. That said, the rotten lard-butts mow down my garden and I still haven't set down seedlings. There is a veritable groundhog subdivision under my woodshed. Even if I didn't do the garden I'm concerned about structural integrity of the sheds and fence. They're brazen; they'll sit around the yard and not even blink at you. They've munched plants right up against my back door. I'm pondering a crossbow. Yard's not that big. But dropping a couple hundred bucks on this just galls me. And bolts are not cheap. Besides, my husband is a soft touch and freaks at Icky Things. I don't, but minimizing evidence is best. |

Identify the hole you'll bomb then guess which hole is that burrow's escape hole. Fill the escape hole with rocks and dirt. Light the bomb, place in primary hole then fill that with rock and dirt. Works well but not 100%. Good luck. ![]() |

How about a box trap like a Havaheart or a homemade box trap. Trap the groundhog and them drown them in a barrel of water. Quick, silent, and done. This will work for where you can't use firearms.

Well, hadn't thought of that. I'll file that one away. It's something to consider if you don't see them hanging out in the yard. meanwhile we've set up the electric fence with better wire, and I put mothball flakes under the toolshed. We witnessed an extremely dazed and sluggish groundhog come out, waddle onto the woodshed, climb up on the firewood, gnaw a garbage bag full of dead grass that was left there (the bag, not contents). Kinda weird. He did not go anywhere near the garden. I hope I can see one of the little effers try it though. |

Good luck. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/FredFeral/IMG_0777.jpg +1 It's a lean black powder type mix which produces a lot of sulfur dioxide gas (SO2). It fills the burrow. If you have some old road flares you need to get rid of they produce a lot of sulfur dioxide as well. |

This is how I've killed several. Okay, well it's a knockoff, but it still works well. Having killed at least two this way, they never came back...
