I've been following the Batmanacw posts on his axes (his posts are very informative), so he motivated me to sharpen and re-finish a few old axes I found at garage sales and flea markets.  Here are a few I done this weekend.  I still may sand and refinish the handles, but the look pretty good.  Two of them I'm giving them to a couple buddy's as gifts so I may redo the handles on them.  The one with the black head I'll probably end up keeping. Here are the pics.

Here is an axe head I found in my back yard a few years ago.  I've been polishing it and I sharpened it too.  I'm getting ready to hang that handle on it.  My question is which end of the axe head does the handle go into the eye?

There is a sharper tapered end and the end that the taper is longer.

Does the axe handle go in this end of the eye ^

Or this end ^

Nice... I love axes, especially small ones. ,.here's one I cut down from a small ax and made a tomahawk profile, with hammer pole.. still has good weight for chopping..Top one with paracord.

The one that you found is a splitting maul and I'm not sure that a single bit axe handle will fit the eye correctly... mine have straight handles more like sledgehammer handles.

This, by the time you fit a bit axe handle to fit a maul, you've removed enough wood that the first time you whack it, it'll more than likely break.

A maul handle is what you want.

Thanks guys, I didn't know that was the wrong handle.

I'll try to find a round straight handle.  I'd love to find one local, but I may have to order one.

Thanks again

I don't normally collect carpenters hatchets but a few have caught my eye lately. I paid $10 for the Kelly Perfect and $12 for the Kelly Flint Edge Dynamic.

You can see why these are interesting. The Dynamic is just plane cool! The Perfect is in wonderful shape and looks killer. Both are going to be great tools.

Those are really cool.  I got a really nice tomahawk similar to yours at the blade show a few years ago.  The head is blued and its really cool.  I'll have to snap a pic of it and post it on here.

Those are nice users.  I like finding those old axes and resharpening them and fixing them up, because they make great users and I'm not afraid to beat on them.
