Sounds like someone contributed a bit too much to their use it or lose it FSA.

Dont be in too big a hurry to spend it on the first thing that catches your eye.

The rules changed in 2014 and you may be able to roll $500 to the next year.

Be careful.

Some you can, some you cannot. Read the fine print or call their 800 number and ask specifically.

I know people that used it for tvs, guns, ect... the ones we were issued were live visa cards and worked when they ordered non medical items. I never heard if any of them heard anything from the company after the fact.

A lot of these accounts are pre-tax funds.  There are no restrictions on where the spending works (as in, the cash register isn't going to refuse the sale) as you can buy a 2 liter of soda (which doesn't qualify) and some bandaids (which may qualify) in the same transaction at Wal-Greens.

Now, you've spent money using a trackable card, that you haven't been taxed for, and don't intend to pay tax on.

Whoops. That's where the catch is. It may not catch up to you at all, or it may not happen for a couple of years.  But, are you going to bet the same IRS that decided to go after non-profits based on political slant won't go after people buying firearms with pre-taxed and never will be taxed personal income?
