Just dropped of  battle box at my mother in laws last week. Had a spare pelican 1720 and put a colt 6920 with 12 mags and 5 mags for my pistol.

Those things are too pricey for my taste. I would love to get my hands on an original GI model though.

I don't see how a claymore bag is "greyman" compared to just about anything on the civilian market
Plus, they aren't terribly durable while holding a lot of heavy stuff like loaded mags

This, plus it's hard to be greyman when toting a rifle. I'm trying to wrap my mind around the rationale behind carrying 6-9 magazines. If you plan on trading that much lead you better be part of a team. Ammo is heavy, I would rather trade the excess weight in ammo for water.

A low profile chest rig like a MAV with single mag shingles is pretty low profile and can be hidden under a light jacket.

If using the SKS w 10 round fixed mag, I have a shoulder bag with 400 rounds on stripper clips. I can load it pretty fast with the stripper clips.

can you carry enough ammo on your back to do any good for a long term BO?

very few people can cart around more than about 30 pounds of stuff for any distance.

That's why God inspired Henry Ford (or, in my case, Chevrolet).

And that "very few people" is subjective.  First I have no plan to do a log distace, on foot, 'bug out'.  I might relocate by vehicle.

Secondly, there are lots of people who have carried far more than 30 pounds for 'any distance'.  Are they fat, couch potato, basement-dwelling "Call of Duty" players?

No.

No.

I agree there are a few people who can do it, but they are not real common, and it is a good way to get hurt.

I agree with you that the BO by vehicle idea is a lot more rational than the goofy idea of doing so on foot.

If you are reduced to BO on foot, you are probably going to die if you have to go any serious distance. Maybe not you personally, but the majority of people are going to be in very serious trouble after 10 or 20 miles.

Pretty much this.  The 20 rd PMAG fits better with the rifle is in the safe.  When it's in the case in the truck, there will be either another 30 rd PMAG or a 60 rd SF mag.

If shtf I'm more concerned with carrying water than a combat load out. I live in the desert. I can survive without a gun, but not without water.

That being said I have 4 40rd pmags that I would take in a backpack, 1 40rd in the rifle. The rest would be some food and water and a few other essential items. Total load out would be probably 50-60lbs which I can effectively carry while walking for a long time.

If the situation is so bad that I feel the need to openly carry a rifle. It's six in a low profile chest rig that can go under a jacket and six in my pack. Also, some odd sized ammo can I picked up  that holds 20 or so GI 30 rounders to throw into a vehicle.

standard combat load is 7 mags
