I have one of these and the other Coleman flashlights at Walmart. They are the best I have seen and put surefire lights to shame. This one is my favorite of them. I beat the shit out of this one. Smashed into cement. Dropped onto cement from 30ft. Soaked in two feet of water overnight. Only scratches and works without skipping a beat. ![]() |

While I have Surefire, Brinkman, Streamlight and various other more pricey lights, those have all gotten thrown in a box and for the last 4 years my 'go to' light was been either the 1 watt or 3 watt Rayovac X-Treme 40 & 80 lumen 2xAA lights:

Battery life is great, they don't get hot when running, they are bright, dependable and use AA. I bought about 10 of them when they went on clearance a few years ago @ $8 each. |

I have been happy with my MAGLITE XL50?
It is under $50 and has been solid. |

I have two of these from Shiningbeam.com
Love them, amazing light output for one AA, the flood to throw head is super handy. ![]() |

Deal Extreme has the flashilight listed above for $15 with free shipping.
Actually it is not the same version available at shining beam. The deal extreme version will take 14500 batteries and also has three different modes. The downside is that you can't pick your tint like you can with shining beam. There is a pretty impressive review for the light here for those who are interested. The unique thing about this is the convex optic which allows it to be an incredible thrower, or a "floody" by rotating the head. |

Shining beam is great to deal with, he is in NYC somewhere so everytime I order from him it's here like the next day or two.
DX has decent lights for cheap, but it can take like 3 weeks to get it. If you dare head over to candle power forum and learn how to make your own lights, highly addicting though. I have made a bunch of P7 maglites now and they blow a standard maglite right out of the water. Massive amount of light output. |

I agree with your comments about shining beam. However, his version won't take 14500s and also is a single mode, whereas the deal extreme has two usable modes, and a strobe (which I would be happier without). The 14500s allow this light to put out as much light as most 2 AA lights on the market, so that is a pretty big advantage.

Just a quick update...
I received my 5 lights approx 2 1/2 weeks after I ordered them (They come from China.) For sub $2 flashlights, they are not bad. I mainly got them for my kids for an upcomming camping trip this month. They tend to loose / break flashlights so I didn't want to spend much $$$. Quality is about what you would expect from a $2 China flashlight. The case is metal, but seems pretty thin, the plastic lens on the front feels cheap, but hell a 3w LED for under $2, I am not complaining. I put an AA battery in, and they all turned on and had a decent amount of light for a cheap flashlight (it's no Fenix). If the kids don't loose them or break them after the camping trip, I will put 1 in each car as a spare and keep the others for the kids to play with. Originally Posted By Ianq:

I agree. I got two of them. One did not work. Got my money back - no hassle at all. http://ilbob.blogspot.com/2011/12/3w-police-lights-led-flashlight.html |

The beam focus isn't quite as nice as the Romisen (the focus ring slides up and down, instead of twisting) - but it's still a very decent light for the price. |

My Dad bought me one like the one pictured above, and it's a great little light. One quirky thing with the lens in the out position is that the beam of light is the shape of the LED, which is square. However it has very good throw like a spot light without dissipating.

I bought about 10 of them when they went on clearance a few years ago @ $8 each. I have a couple of those (one of each - 1W and 3W) from when Walmart carried them. Great, simple lights. Out of all the lights I've had and have, these are the ones I'll throw in the truck bag when I want a good, reliable, general use light. I don't like the Coleman Max lights... they act kinda flakey. Don't know if it's the switches or other electronics, but they just don't seem like good lights to me. The ones I've had have pretty crappy greenish-yellow beams, as well. I really like Fenix lights, BUT I've had three where the switches have turned to shit. My first one (single CR123) did fine for about a year and a half of EDC use before it went tits up. My second one (single AA) lasted maybe a month before its switch started acting up. My third one (another single CR123 simlar to the first) lasted a couple of months. I have a 4th one I've recently acquired (another single AA), but it doesn't get much use. I don't trust Fenix for any kind of hard use where I want 100% reliability. I have a couple of Quark 2x CR123 lights. One of 'em, with the standard reverse clicky, the head somehow unscrews itself in my pocket. The other with the forward clicky is doing okay. Neither has had much use. Because of my experiences with Fenix and the similarities in design, I won't trust these lights for hard use, either. As of now, I've got the Rayovac lights stashed away in bags since I know they're reliable. I carry one of the Quarks in my pocket every day - just have to check the head periodically and hope it doesn't flake out like the Fenix lights. For around the house, I keep a few Surefire G2 LEDs and a couple of Wally World Brinkmann 2x CR123 lights with LED conversions laying around. On my bedside is a Surefire E2D LED. I also have a single AA light I picked up at Target a couple of years ago, and it's pretty solid, although I haven't used it for EDC or anything. Believe it's marked "River Rock" or something. It has been a decent single-output LED with a nice, firm reverse clicky switch. |

Went camping. Gave 1 light to each kid and 1 to the wife to use. The kids had fun having their own flashlight. They did the usuall things with it that 5 - 10 yr old girls do. To my surprise, the lights worked the whole time and even after repeated drops, hits, throws, they are still working.
I stand by my origional statment that these are great little "disposable" lights and perfect for the kids or to keep as spares in the the car or whatever. Still would not depend on one has my primary light. I am thinking about ordering a few more just to have a stash on hand for emergencies. They would be great as a "Give Away" flashlight if someone needed one in a emergency and not worry about getting it back. Originally Posted By Ianq:

Have you tried cleaning the contacts and screw threads on the flashlight, and the contacts on your batteries? Many reports about flaky switches turn out to be oxidation at points where the batteries make contact with the flashlight, or where the individual pieces of the flashlight screw together. The oxidation tends to build up over time, eventually preventing the flow of current. 91% rubbing alcohol (or the red-bottle HEET fuel system dryer) work great for removing oxidation. Re-apply lube to the threads afterwards. |

I have several "Guidesman" brand AA lights from Menard's that work well after being carried in my pocket with keys and/or a spare handgun mag for over a year.
I think they were less than $5 each. |
