I'm looking at two backpacks made by the same manufacturer that are essentially the same (size and shape are slightly different but not enough to make the decision easy). The main difference is that one is made of 500D nylon while the other is 1000D nylon. They are both pretty close price-wise as well (the 1000D less than $20 cheaper).

What are the pros and cons of the different materials?

I know the 500D will be lighter, but will it resist abrasions as well as the 1000D? And what about water resistance?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and experience.

Alice packs are made with what I believe is 420D so take that into consideration. I have not owned a pack in 500D. I do have 500D material as a gear designer and manufacturer. I would not have a problem using a pack made out of 500D.

both 500d and 1000d cordura is coated with hydrothane the difference being the actual fabric weight only. 1000d will be more durable but unless you plan to drag it around 500 will probably be ok.
Personally I would go with the 1000d
