The thing you want to focus on is acceleration and braking, not really top speed. Some vehicles do really well at highway speeds.
Have a light foot, ease onto the power. Try to coast as much as safely possible.
Actually pay attention to the traffic up ahead and modulate your speed to avoid stopping. Every single time I get in my car I watch people speed up, passing other cars just to get to a red light as quick as they can. Why? Just coast or maintain a speed where you don't have to stop at all. If you're looking a block or two ahead, this isn't that hard. Most people only drive with a 20' bubble of awareness outside their vehicle, if that.

Why???

Because they have never acquired common sense and discipline...
