Oh my is that the future crime law from hell. (Drum roll) Of course, Ohio was preceded by California, Oregon, and Illinois. and New Jersey is right behind. A felony no less and two states, iL and NJ if they passed their law, they keep your car whether you are charged with a crime or not.
I watched the Gureny arrest in Ohio. Holy Cow, they stripped that car down like a border passing complete with bolt cutters. Basically two black guys, strike one, out of state car, strike two, speeding, "Oh boy" and of course the we smelled pot so the search. No drugs or at most the passenger had a small bit of pot on him. It depends on who's story you read. They were sitting back of the cruiser all calm and polite. Called their girl and said "No big deal" Wrong. Big deal. It wasn't even their car, borrowed car.
The laws basically say manufactured which make me wonder a tanneur cover on pickup? Damn this is some crazy shit. Downright Soviet Union shit, cars being stripped down and searched on the side of the road. People going to jail for not what they were doing but suspected might do. The mere fact you have a secret compartment is somehow proof you are smuggling drugs and they don't give a damn if they nail a bunch of innocent people to get the guilty. I should say maybe future guilty. A locked case like a tool box chained or bolted to the vehicle is what?
Anyway thinks, some more totalitarian BS in the communist states to avoid.

BTW, To answer the OP, invest in a locking gun case and keep it in your trunk. TSA approved is good in case you fly your guns somewhere. Mags and ammo in a separate locked case like an ammo can. Your trunk is the lock so you can go unlocked case if you want but its one step, ammo and gun separately. That meets Federal Gun Transportation laws which trumps the local BS laws. Of course, local laws differ. In TN, for example with a CCW, I can load the inside of my care with an aresnal. If you are worried about someone breaking into your trunk, take the guns out. Most guns are stolen from people's vehicles at their homes. Alarms are a good thing. In the city, they'll be ignored pretty much but at home, highest risk, it may wake you up or wake the dogs up. As for being PC between car and say apartment, any electric guitar padded gig bag works just fine. You can even buy them with shoulder straps and backpack straps. They're very low cost too. Just bought one for a friends box guitar, $20. Its what I use to use living apartments to keep from freaking the soccer moms out. That said, the newer generic square gun cases most folks don't know what it is.
Anyway best way possible is to meet Federal gun transportation method. After that its local whatever and that varies not only state to state but often city to city.
Another thing i can reccomend is always keep shooting glasses, plugs, and targets in your vehicle and you are always coming to or from the range or did so the other day. Hunting is another option just have the license and know what varmits are in season year round and any other restrictions, like orange. Now some will tell you to go PC gun like a bolt action or lever action but I'll tell you that doesn't matter anymore. It use to but not anymore. The world has gone anti-gun BS crazy.
Unless like these guys who have posted pictures of their AR's right there in arms reach, the best advice I can give you is to consider what possible scenario you can think of that its "Wait a minute, while I get my gun." Keep in mind, unless we are cops were not charged with apprehension in society. In fact, its against the law. I wish I could have twin mounted .50s on my car but we can't. If you don't have your CCW/CHL get one. A gun in the hand is worth a 1,000 a trunk locked away. They make some nice handguns with high cap mags or if limited many mags.
