Congrats Ops.

I still remember the photos that you'd post of him, even as a young lad, over on the Chat.

I hope he stays safe and does well.

Congrats Ops.  Be proud and supportive of him.

Can relate on the emotions... My son just started his 3rd week of USMC Infantry School  (ITB) at Pendleton.  It's not the summer-camp he was hoping it would be.

Ya raise 'em the best way you can... To be free thinkers... And what do they go and do?  Yeah...

Ops,

What you posted of SBK in the past makes me say:
"He got through basic...um well duh...and why should we anticipate anything else?"

Congrats to SBK and you.

I hope his career in the Army is prosperous.

Lets hope the Rules of Engagement are changed for the better by the next President so our boys aren't sent in harms way encumbered by suicidal ROE's.

So now he has one hand tied behind his back and works for Obama like our troops that were ORDERED NOT TO FIGHT BACK when attacked by the Iranians?

If you are joking, it is in very poor taste.

This isnt GD, this isnt the place for political agenda or views. We know Ops and his kid and have seen him come up thru the ranks on here. He is a good egg and will do very well, its no surprised he joined the military.

(1)  I'm a disabled U.S. Army vet (Viet Nam era)
(2)  I'm a current member of Patriot Guard Riders and have ridden funeral escort missions and stood flag duty for multiple American KIA's
(3)  I don't consider suicidal Rules of Engagement to be mere "political" bumps in the road for those of our military who are being killed unnecessarily or forced to surrender because of them
(4)  My son is a USMC vet, so I've been in the OP's situation and understand it
(5)  And what exactly are the OP's "mixed emotions"?  Are they similar to mine?  Namely he is proud of his son on the one hand and upset on the other that his son may be killed some day due to being handcuffed by ROE's that protect the enemy instead of our troops?

Congrats. Mine graduated ft. Sill in Oct, and is stuck in AIT. He is saying a bunch of contradictory stuff and it looks like they are kicking him out if I can see through all the BS he is spewing. Oh well. I guess he prefers the school of hard knocks and being poor.

Big congrats Ops!

My son just turned 17 last week, filled out all his paperwork and turned in his medical records for pre-screen before his MEPS date.  He's trying to do the split-option with the National Guard, where he'll do basic this summer and finish AIT next summer.  I haven't influenced him at all (still serving and going on 27 years of service), but he really wants to go Infantry and then into ROTC for his commission.  It's about the only life he knows, but he's much smarter than I was when I was 17, so he may not make a career out of it

Times have changed.  Where the Army often accepted those at the lowest end of academic scores and very little education and maybe even slightly overweight, the current draw-down is making them very selective.

For any of you with young children being told to get your kid on some form of ADHD medication...avoid it if you can and if you have to, get them off as soon as you can.  The recruiter said they must now be off any medication for two years before enlisting and they still need to provide transcripts of their grades the last year on medication and the year after they've been off.  This is one reason I told my son's fourth grade teacher to pound sand when she didn't want to deal with a 8 year old boy.

The good news?  Well, my wife and I are celebrating his basic training with a 150 mile section hike on the AT

Thanks for keeping us updated Ops; where is his first assignment?  I travel to all the CONUS installations, maybe I could track him down and check on him for you, let him know dad has eyes and ears everywhere
