Big congrats Ops!
My son just turned 17 last week, filled out all his paperwork and turned in his medical records for pre-screen before his MEPS date. He's trying to do the split-option with the National Guard, where he'll do basic this summer and finish AIT next summer. I haven't influenced him at all (still serving and going on 27 years of service), but he really wants to go Infantry and then into ROTC for his commission. It's about the only life he knows, but he's much smarter than I was when I was 17, so he may not make a career out of it
Times have changed. Where the Army often accepted those at the lowest end of academic scores and very little education and maybe even slightly overweight, the current draw-down is making them very selective.
For any of you with young children being told to get your kid on some form of ADHD medication...avoid it if you can and if you have to, get them off as soon as you can. The recruiter said they must now be off any medication for two years before enlisting and they still need to provide transcripts of their grades the last year on medication and the year after they've been off. This is one reason I told my son's fourth grade teacher to pound sand when she didn't want to deal with a 8 year old boy.
The good news? Well, my wife and I are celebrating his basic training with a 150 mile section hike on the AT
Thanks for keeping us updated Ops; where is his first assignment? I travel to all the CONUS installations, maybe I could track him down and check on him for you, let him know dad has eyes and ears everywhere
