See Link.... EMP Weapon Confrimed
I'm assuming the US and other countries are more than a few generations beyond what is being shown here, and given the fact that the US just moved its NORAD command center back into the EMP proof mountain, does this change where an EMP type attack lives on your Threat Matrix?? |
|
Honestly, not really.
I prep for things like natural disasters, water source contamination, short term loss of employment, shelter in place events, etc. If an EMP were to hit my area and power was out for an extended period of time (years), I'll likely just be a statistic. All the time, money and effort (that I have) couldn't protect me and my family from something like that. This might sound like I don't care or I've given up, but that's just not true. For me, an EMP attack is just as significant an event as a meteor hitting earth or the sun burning out. I'll do whatever I can to keep my family protected, fed, comfortable and encouraged, but there's only so much that can be done. |
|
I learned here that EMP is no threat at all. I watched a TV show about it 10 years ago.....
|
|
Not so much
As I see it now: The source of a credible EMP threat is the USA.gov. Well if the USA.gov wants me specifically then I might as well say oh well and BOHICA. ETA I put the threat into a "possible, but not likely" class, and "big and very difficult to prep for" like a Yellowstone eruption |

View Quote What they are likely to do, is make it more powerful, more targeted (one office in that building) and more efficient... probably better tuned for taking out electronics. (After all, removing the power is as easy as an axe to the pole for the neighborhood most of the time, attacking one building from a distance to remove power seems pointless. So they are after electronics.) Worrying or using this to "prove" that continent-wide power outages by EMP are now again on the table is... just not sensible. NORAD got moved back because the russians are getting uppitty again, and Iran might have nukes soon. My personal planning remains unchanged and will continue to treat EMP as "not worth thinking about." |

Of all the crap there IS to worry about.. a targeted EMP just isn't on my radar.

EMP weapons were in existence back in 1970 or prior. Very limited in effect.
|

Don't know why we even need this as the folks that are our enemy either have EMP proof bunkers or live in caves .
I plan to just keep on keepin' on. We are working to turn back the clock and party like its 1899 anyway. |

EMP events make for really great stories though! I've read some awesome fiction regarding EMP. Hopefully they all just remain stories.... LIGHTS OUT?

From what I've read an EMP would mostly affect long wires like power lines. Long term power grid failure is worth preparing for in my opinion. There was a planned attack on the power grid in CA a couple years ago, and a close call with a solar flare in 2013. It could happen. I have a large generator for pumping the well and large loads, small generator for lights and refrigeration, and eventually will get a small scale solar power setup that I could run lights and refrigeration. I've got kerosene for backup heat but will add a wood stove. I figure I could go a month with my current setup but would like to extend that a lot.

There was some tests with EMP effects on vehicles. It did manage to shut a number of the down. I can't recall if it fried any. That said, the power the lab generated EMP's were a tiny fraction of a real one. Some people took those tests and claim they're proof an EMP wouldn't be any threat.
There's a strong 'it could never happen' crowd here, which seems like the wrong answer. They especially don't believe in EMP's or solar flares over in the Zombie subforum here, and some of them actually believe in undead zombie apocalypses. They'd rather loot what they need instead of ever thinking they might need to compete for resources with the entire population. Fantasy no-rules! type crap. I count 'zombies' as the worst way to go about surviva.l preps, and EMP as the best. That said, I don't have anything packed in metal 'cages,' but contending with the rest of the population is a key consideration to me. That, plus knocking out all the stuff we rely on. Also, I believe it is very possible. A lot more possible and likely than zombies, ISIS, or many other things. |

(At least in this sub-forum.) The sad fact is that lots of people new to this idea come in after reading Lights Out or One Second after and ALL that is on their brain is preparing for living in the 18th century and hiding in their ammo forts post EMP. What I have always encouraged is a well rounded and logical approach to preparedness. This means doing an actual threat/ risk analysis and starting with the higher probability outcomes first. ETA: I agree with "zombies" being pretty far down the threat register. |

nope, and i still don;t consider emp to be as big a threat as some here think it is.
EMP on an individual level is a moot threat. if your devices are protected and the infrastructure is down they are worthless. If the grid goes down and is irreparably harmed for a year or more, most of us can't afford to store that level of supplies. i am MUCH more worried about direct threats such as immediate civil unrest or natural events than i am about an EMP attack. As for the "weapons". these are EXTREMELY targeted systems not designed or really useful for causing a widespread outage. |

I think we have used EMP emitters on missiles to take out localized electronics.
They were available in the 60's or 70's, I expect improvements have been made, but still very local effects. Laws of Physics are a pain. |

Why would a single EMP event cripple our .mil??
We have subs all over with nuks. Whether the POTUS would use them or not is a different discussion.... I would find it hard to believe that the .mil/.gov can't handle an EMP attack. I'm sure they have protected equipment. Now as far as the civvy power grid, it does not take a super high tech EMP blast like the scifi writers sell so many books based on. A few targeted attacks with improvised shit would do it. I think NatGeo's American Blackout was darn accurate on the timeline (someone doing research for that must have been lunking on AFRCOM SF ) of the chaos. Even if the lights come back on in a few weeks, a LOT of damage will have been done. |

Dont know the science of a long range emp.....
But have seen localized results. Emp is often produced with lightning. Had a nearby strike at work that without hitting building burned out about 200k in three phase machines that were not even turned on. |
|
I took a few classes at The National Nuclear Security Site (formerly known as The Nevada Test site). While there I was able to talk to an individual who was present on Bikini Atoll when full scale atmospheric nuclear weapons tests were conducted. During this period, sufficient EMP was generated to cause widespread disturbances as far away as Hawaii. In that time, the electrical systems weren't based on small components like they are today. The effects of a high altitude nuclear detonation could cause a significant amount of damage. While I don't think prepping solely for an EMP strike is necessary, if you prepare for anything else that leaves you in the dark, you should do just fine.
|
|
I don't know the likely hood of an EMP widespread attack is, but a good CME could take out the grid for a long while.
So can a coordinated number guys with some rifles if they stay on the move and know which substations to put holes in transformers. Either way, I just do basic preps. enough to last the transition. You don't need to outrun the bear, you just need to outrun the slowest person around. |
|
Part of the issue is one of imagination.
We all have been through short power outages. But think of what is the real threat to bringing down our way of life? After all, if the grid fails there are millions of generators and we'd find a way to keep them fueled... but what about the server farms running the internet? Or worse - much worse....what if something took down the international financial system enough to make ATMs and electronic fund transfers either slow or impossible? THAT would render our credit and debit cards useless and force alot of people back to cash and there's not enough printed money to handle all the transactions that are required RIGHT NOW in the real world to run our economy the way we do. Cyberwarfare could take down "our grid" faster and more devastatingly than dropping the physical power grid. Now, I IMAGINE that the banking system is the most robust in the world but....but we've seen incompetents elevated to unthinkably vital posts before so it's not entirely in the realm of tinfoil fiction to imagine a compromised security person sitting in a job that oversees the world's financial health either asleep at the switch or sleeping with the enemy who would/could really screw things up. Fortunately the preps needed to ride out a physical EMP (off grid water, food, power, etc. including caches of cash...) would allow us to endure the worst economic crash in world history and probably give us unheard of opportunities as people attempt to hoc heirlooms to get their hands on cash so they can buy eggs..... |

Before? How about right now????????????????? |

Muslim fanatics (IRAN for example) don't care about MAD. It doesn't scare them even a tiny bit. Also, our nukes are outdated and may not work. Plus our political leadership may or may not have the balls to retaliate.
