Bit of an oversight on my part. We don't eat much canned food and have always been fine with the walmart/target openers. I recently started homebrewing and opening LME cans has taught me I need a better and more robust solution.

I am glad I came across the defect this way, not hungry and eating out of #10 cans.

Anyways, what are the best manual can openers out there? Amazon has a few but each has its share of bad reviews. Nothing stands out.

I use P52s frequently.

The best "normal" one we had was a 30 year old basic model we got when my wife's grandmother died. Thing was awesome for years, until it finally kicked the bucket. We tried all sorts of new ones, swore a lot at them.

Best new normal hand powered model we have is the kitchen aid brand. It isn't great, but works 90% of the time.

P38 is the low-tech standard -but no fun to use with arthritis, very cold hands, or injured fingertips.

These guys are amazing, but probably not what you are looking for:

P38 is good to have for survival, but for daily use, no thanks. Unless you want rippling thumb muscles...

The best can opener is MULTIPLE can openers... Find one that is solid steel, looks well made, and then buy several of them and store away and replace as needed.

Opening a can is not brain surgery, no need to make it more difficult than it is...

Interesting! Wished the crank handle was larger.

My wife keeps breaking can openers, not sure how really, everything from the Wally world ones to the supposedly higher end ones.  I finally grabbed the can opener out of my backpack, which I've had for over 20 years.  We've been using it for a year and she hasn't broken it, yet.

It's a Ecko Miracle Roll 881.  From the looks of it, they're considered "vintage" so I'm not sure they're made any more.  Looks like this:

I also have the Ecko Miracle 885 which I've had for a long time.  It's just like the 881, but w/ long handles.

I've used the can opener on multi-tools and Swiss Army knives and once you get the hang of it, they're quite easy and effective.

Why does everyone say P-38 over the P-51?  The P-51 isn't much larger but is more rigid and is easier to use as it provides more leverage.  My 5'3" wife has no issues with it but the P-38 was more work for her when we tried it.

They made a lot of the components for the Swing away before they moved it to China.

We use an Oxo Good Grip in the kitchen. In the field I use the can opener on my Victorinox Pioneer.

As is so often the case, FPNI!
Though I’m not sure of why people mentioned buying them in bulk or 20 packs.  I have had the same one on my key ring or dog tag chain since 1977.

I *had* one on my keychain since the early 80s as well. I flew all over the country, post 9/11, with it and TSA never so much as batted an eye at it.

It was taken away from me when I went through security at the county courthouse when I was summons for jury duty
The rent a cop at the scanner somehow noticed it and said he had to confiscate it because it could be used as a weapon.
I bet its on his key chain now

For backpacking or camping?  Yeah, no problem.

For in the house??  No way.   It's small, uncomfortable, and a pain in the ass.  Their are a host of better can openers for household duty.

They part you see in most of the pictures fits into a counter/table edge mount.  They are big and can get in the way, but will open any can fast.

Make sure it comes with the mount and it should be good to go.
