wow....it melted right through the plastic washer, and it looks like it was starting on the chip underneath, but you got it out in time.  seems like something shorted out and it went all "chernobyl" on you....

sorry that happened, but i did the same thing with my first Grid Tie Inverter, the very first time i plugged it in.  got a new cap' for it, but haven't had time to swap them out.....maybe this weekend.

Hard to beat this.  I've bought a few and they are VERY bright and very good throw.  19.95 at my Costco!
Awesome around the house light.  Lights up a whole room on flood as well.

I really like the JetBeam PA40 @ around $50... IPX8 waterproof and uses 4AA's, comes with a belt holster. 4 brightness levels with a max output of 468 lumens, down to only 2 at the lowest setting.  Has a battery status indicator so you know how soon you'll run out of juice, and it auto-dims to the next brightest setting as voltage runs down, so unlike a lot of LED flashlights, it's not bright one minute and totally dead the next.  The battery status indicator also shows times remaining at the current brightness setting, so you can adjust brightness and see how much longer the light will be GTG at the lower setting.   Clicky switch can also be momentary press/released without clicking it fully, which is nice. Oh, it also remembers last brightness mode so you don't have to fuck with it every time you turn it on/off to set it to the right brightness.

We use these at work, and I agree that they throw a bunch of light.

An added bonus for home use would be that you could standardize on that battery for other cordless tools.

Hi guys,

So I have a few acres I live on and have a field that I guess is about 100 yards and ends in a tree line.  There are coyotes, deer, etc that like to stur up trouble and I want to be able to put a ton of light on them to scare and/or ID them to make sure it's not something else like a tresppasser or a neighbor's dog.  I've seen Fenix named a few times but not sure which one fits my needs.  So here's my criteria

1. can throw a lot of light at 100yrds or more
2. lots of lumens
3. good run time
4. can run on normal batteries like D's
5. Most importantly trying to stay at or under $100

What should I buy?

We're now up to the EA-41.  The EA-4 is so 2013.

And the ea41 throws an extra 65 yards or so (2015 edition will at least).  I think the new one is 1050 lumens or so.

I ended up going with the Sunwayman D40A in cool white, after seriously considering the EA-4.  The fact that some had a problem with the vinyl switch cover ballooning up due to batteries venting, spooked me a bit.

I think everybody should have a 4xAA light in their stable, as you get a good deal more output, they're not all that huge and runtimes are decent enough.

Plus, the 36-40mm head means you'll get a bit more throw vs. the ~25mm heads that we're used to in single/double AA lights.

Fenix is a good brand.  I've had an E20 for years and it has given me great service.

How about one of those rechargeable million plus candle power lights? I have one that lights up everything for a ways that an ex bought me for twenty dollars years ago. It just plugs into the wall until your ready to use it.
