Have not noticed this before.  My son just got his whittling chip.
I will will try this with him.

As long I do not have to cry out from the wilderness while I do this.

I just read the 1st and 4th annual threads and I think this is an awesome thing you do.  You must have had an awesome relationship with your grandfather for you to create something in his honor.  Well done sir!

Alright fish, I finally got mine done.  Switched out knives this year to a little buck that I got after being in a wedding.  Apple was an organic sun-something, a good eater

I tried a different technique than last year.  I've actually given a fair amount of thought to it in the past year

All together and off the apple

I broke it down into 6 inch pieces for measuring,  and wound up at a conservative 92 1/4 inches.

Much better showing than last year, but I could definitely see room for improvement.  The change of technique really helped, as did the knife.

And in the spirit of apple season, a couple bonus cider making shots:

Pretty neat thing fish, and thanks for putting it on for us

Well... crud! Wish I would have known about this sooner as I would have put my hand to it.

First try with an M9. Made it about 2/3 of the way through before it broke. Finished with a Benchmade edc.

</a>" />

Top one stretched out to 40"
Bottom stretched out to 33"

The apple was a Crispin and was delicious.

</a>" />

I had tried with smaller, sharper knives and kept slicing through the peel. Got a bit frustrated and got busy with the M9. Made me feel better.

ETA: NICE JOB ON THE APPLE SLICING AND THE PRESS LOON! GOOD JOB.

Second try. Same type of apple, same knife.

Broken up for measuring:

177 3/4 inches. Again  an improvement.  I can see places to improve, but perhaps I'll save that for next year.

Fun!

Every year I swear I'm going to practice ahead of time for this and every year I procrastinate until the last minute.  This year is no different

I go plundering through the kitchen to find what could possibly be the smallest apple ever grown (perfect size for my kids, no so much when you're aiming for peel length).

I grab my trusty dull pocket knife and proceed to peel, breaking the peel about 2/3 of the way down

I'll call this 31 1/2"

Nowhere near competitive, but I'll own up to a bust.  If I have a chance, I'll sneak out to the store during lunch tomorrow for another apple and try it again.

Regardless, it is a good contest and a fine tribute that you put on every year, Op. Great job sharing the memories.  Thanks for the opportunity!

Sadly this year I don't have any classwork to procrastinate on, so I got around to this somewhat late.

Apple: Fuji

Tool: x-acto knife

Time: About four episodes of Rick and Morty

The delicious Fuji (and trusty x-acto):

Peeling complete:

And cut into 10" strips (plus the few pieces that didn't want to straighten out) for easy measuring:

Total length this year: 221"

Things I've learned while peeling apples:

Fuji apples are delicious.

I still don't know where I put my measuring tape.

According to Guinness, the world's longest unbroken apple peel measured 172ft 4in, and was peeled by Kathy Wafler of Rochester, NY in 1976.

Thanks again fish223 for this fun and delicious event!

Well, I tried again this afternoon, but didn't fare much better.  I had a decent peel going, but I broke it trying to get it away from the apple itself.  The two strands were 36" and 19 1/2".  Even if I had kept it together, the 55 1/2" wouldn't have been competitive.  Good news is, I beat my first attempt, but looking back at the last couple years, I'm actually losing ground

Great job though guys, y'all have some impressive peels.  You certainly have steadier hands and more patience than I do.

So, I got to the Lulu Hypermarket just in time to grab the last Honeycrisp! Got some cool change back too! Did not have time to find my uber-tactical, banned from NYS knife, decided too use the CKRT money clip/knife.

Getting started:

The curl:

Measurement, 154" in total.

Thanks fish for doing this again!

Last minute entry, and shockingly did not follow the rules of posting the unbroken peel first. Will have an eligible entry next year. I found this thread about 3 weeks ago, and gave it some thought. But not effort.
So tonight at 11:00 I sat down with my 2.5 inch diameter random countertop apple, and my late father's Bucklite.

Got to 61", but my knife needs to be sharpened.

This knife has some hunting heritage with it - 30 years or so ago, when I was 12, we went to PA to hunt turkeys because you had to be 14 in NY. My dad took this knife. His friend sharpened it that night (my dad could not/ did not sharpen knives). We set up on a bird, and he tried to cut a small sapling that was growing between his legs where he sat down - went right through pinky the sized stem and through his camo pants and into his leg. We sat and waited for the bird that never came in, and it looked like he had cut his femoral artery when he stood up - blood on the ground, soaking his pants leg - messy.

Years and many surgeries later, every surgeon asked about the nasty looking scar when they looked for locations to put a catheter, wondered what surgeon had done it.

Thanks for the memories and the beginnings of carpal tunnel!
