A Carrington level CME hitting us strait up would be devastating, as in no electric for months bad. Much worse than anything the various rogues in DC could do to us.

Please understand, I believe a man-made economic collapse is the most likely big event in the near term. But that does not eliminate the possibility of something else happening before then.

"It could Literally"

"In the "Next Decade or Two"

"End the Existence of this Nation"

WTF???

Is EMP the replacement for their Failed Global Warming???

How do I cash in on this, like Gore, et al?

ETA, they might be right, at the rate we're going, where is the $$$ coming from to support the defense Budget.

Altho I expect China will dwarf Iran as a viable threat.

5.5 Relative Risk by County

These risk factors can be combined for each EHV transformer
and then summarised to estimate the relative risk by county.
The scale of relative risk ranges over a factor of 1000 (Figure
4). This means that for some counties, the chance of an
average transformer experiencing a damaging geomagnetically
induced current is more than 1000 times that risk in the lowest
risk county. The regions with the highest risk are along the
corridor between Washington D.C. and New York City.

Pardon my stupidity, but when I read the article it was unclear whether they meant the grid will "just" crash or whether anything that uses electricity will be fried (as they seem to suggest).  Am I right that at worst this would cause an extended blackout?

So, like with 'global warming' the point of the "scientists" is to hype the risks so as to terrify people into voting to give them boat loads of money and reduce 'red tape' (i.e. oversight, accounting, etc.)....

Those with no vested interest in getting power and money from the deal (insurance companies) can more or less objectively look at the data and calmly conclude that CME won't result in a 'lights out' scenario for the whole country. 40 million people from NYC to DC out of power would suck, but it wouldn't result in Mad Max. The rest of the country would come to their rescue etc. they wouldn't starve.

It's sort of like the east coast Tsunami fear - I was afraid of it (and hurricanes) when moving to the coastal empire. But after getting there and talking to locals, seeing the data I sleep much better knowing that much of the fear is hype - La Palma landslide won't flood the east coast. Puerto Rico quake.... would be local flooding but again no doomsday end of the world scenario.

Hurricanes CAN hit Georgia...but none have since 1970s.... CME could hurt us....but it isn't going to end us.

Nuclear exchanges would hurt too - if we lost Ft. Benning, Stewart, Kings Bay, Savannah river site, and Ft. Hunter (the latter I'd see and hear the boom) it would "be bad" but not 'end of the world' bad. Even if (God forbid) it was all 1 mt Chinese nukes. GA would continue to function, trucks would still make it up I-95. the air and sea ports would still be open for business. crops would still be grown, etc.

I'm beginning to suspect that all these doom and gloom scenarios floated around are designed not so much to make us prepared as much as to dispirit most people (we being the exception). Make people demoralized and then decide to just live for today or get into fantasy and escapism - to make people feel vulnerable and desperate so they'll more easily vote to put someone, anyone "in charge" of their security to save us from the sun, the sea, nature, the 'terrorists', or whatever doomsday boogie man is next.

I think the big concern would be that an event like this probably would damage substation transformers and other high VA equipment, the kind of equipment that they don't keep many spares around just in case. The initial rush would be to borrow/buy spares from unaffected utilities, when that source runs out it's wait for new or rebuilt equipment to come into the pipeline. From what I have read, this would affect a different part of the electrical grid than what a wind event does.

I saw that article yesterday as well and while it could fry the grid as we know it, knowing what I know about electronics from that amateur radio side, things not plugged into the grid would probably be fine.  It would be like a giant surge so only things plugged in or with big antennas attached would likely attract the surge.
Hi doubt many vehicles or personal electronics would be effected.  That said gas and generators would be in high demand pretty quick, imagine our country with no power grid for a few months...
Every transformer would likely fry, and they don't keep many spares on hand...  I doubt they are made in the US any more ether.

You're correct on the 'FEAR' part GST...

Or could we call it "Being Cautionary"   -and applying Abundant Common 'Survival' Sense??

My hesitation to provide pix of our trailer has EVERYTHING to do with OPSEC, and the fact that it isn't only my say whether or not pix get posted. My SO has worked by my side almost every hour on our Stealth Trailer and she has as much right to decline to provide pix, as I do to provide them.

She DID!

I'm such an Attention Whore that I would LOVE to show it off to EVERYBUDDY, but I have to constantly restrain myself...

It is so far beyond the 'expedition' and BO trailers folks post links to, with it's arguably and still, sophistication, advanced systems, and functionality, it's dynamitically impressive!

Sort of like comparing a MIG-21 to an F-117...

We've repeatedly discussed the pix issue, and considering the investment we have in the trailer [$30K+ and over a thousand hours work since 2003 and over the years, guessing], and the potential consequences of publicly displaying it on the web, and having it appear on Google Images every time someone searched the name, we agreed not to do it.

I HAVE posted many times at length of its systems, how to go about doing what we did, pros and cons, and have always offered to share technical info how others can shorten the pursuit of their own design, by capitalizing on the countless hours we have invested.

However, I make no apologies to Tire Lickers, who seem to have a need to be VICARIOUSLY ENTERTAINED by other peoples' efforts ---since I really don't care to risk everything involved, in a circle jerk with Entertainment Deficient Basement Dwellers with Neck Beards.

It's interesting, although I've offered almost countless times to share technical info on the stealth trailer, NO ONE [that I remember] has EVER asked for more [significant] details, or very few.

I have provided limited pix several times, upon requests in posts for them.

Which suggests to me that the shallow Tire Lickers who whine about no pix, [and prolly will never do ANYTHING to build their own, EVEN having been given pix of our trailer  ---or not], are just...

---that.

The offer still stands to share systems' technical info, our experiences after ~75,000 miles of towing it, all over the USA, on all kinds of roads, terrific wind storms and snow storms, boondocking in the MIDDLE of towns, on gas wells, axles coming loose in the middle of the night at cruise, many, many adventures of all sorts, and having ackshully DONE it,

---and SURVIVED  [Altho once we thought we were gonna die...]

---upon legitimate request.

Not gonna hold my breath tho....

There is youtube guy that does a daily solar observation, there are evaluations of specific solar spots and potential threats. I see him as a potential early warning system to anything that may be an issue. There's alot of other science and commentary, a different look at global warming which is based more on solar activity than humans mucking about,  I believe it to be worthwhile. I normally start my day with his report and a review of markets. Suspicious0bservers is the guys utube channel.

There's also the EMP commision, which covers the threat thoroughly.  There's also a series of talks on youtube from Empact America, the youtube EMP conference, is a sobering listen from  a bunch of folks that aren't the averrage panicked youtuber, real science and credentials from some of the speakers.

Everything from simple control systems in a power plant,  to complex computer systems get cooked. Almost all plants in the US use stata systems which will more than likely be affected. 90% of the US infrastructure has not been emp hardened, virtually no testing of the telecommunications system has occurred,  as it has been changing too fast.

Bron Cikotus, hardened missile systems and facilities for the airforce. They tested emp at moderate levels, one of the interesting stories was that when the tested it against occupied buildings, they were "shocked" to find that the emp caused significant arching in the building, from light sockets to computer keyboards cooking off - the conducted further tests with people out of room or not allowed to touch anything with electriciy. You can google search his background it is extensive and filled with emp testing, in particular for hardening Airforce systems and missile systems.

Here's a technical talk given about emp and the testing done historically. It's interesting to hear some of the discoveries they made.  He covers the information above.

One can subscribe to solar flare alerts from the Australian Government here
http://www.ips.gov.au/mailman/listinfo/ips-flare-alert

They are automatically generated and are typically sent very quickly upon an event occurring (delay seems to be all email related).

If you have a smart phone you are basically notified in real-time anywhere you have a connection.

Uh no, I don't think they would. I think 90% of America would think good riddance. Nothing personal against the individuals, Just everyything NYC and DC represent.
