For anyone interested I have a feature article on Prepping in the July 10 (Newstand July 16th) issue of Shotgun News.

If anyone's interested, please check it out and tell me what you think.
Feedback has been very positive so far.

Why am I posting this here? I'd like to see more prepping articles in this publication.
If you liked the article or the idea please send an email saying so to

thanks

I know you are a prolific writer in other areas.

For this article, did you simply do a lot of research or is this something you live by? I.e. is it your first hand experience.

I am just curious, I will check out the article either way.
So you are saying God hates these endangered ducks?

No, I am just saying that if God liked ducks they wouldn't be endangered.

Very good question, thanks for asking.
Yes, its a way of life not a research paper assignment for me.

I grew up in rural Maine and lived there most of my life. Now I am on a small farm in
rural Kansas. I took every pic in the article, there are no 'stock images' used.
The lead image of the aftermath of a tornado is from the town I live in after
60% of it was destroyed in 2008. I travel a fair bit learning all I can and am just
back from Siberia.

This was an introductory article intended to lead into more and deeper
discussions. It was intended to be an exhortation to prep while also voicing
the opinion that an ammo fort and a vault full of guns is not 'prepping'. Too
many 'gun people' focus just on the guns and ammo part.

We put out 37 issues a year. I'd like to see a prepping piece in one issue
every month. This is the first step....

Self Reliance Journal and helped Jim Benson start modernsurvival.net

Got my SGN yesterday but hadn't read the article yet. Read it just now. It's a very good article. Some thoughts I had:

- On the part about making a plan, I would have people list the most likely events that would happen to them in their area. If you're in North Texas, tornadoes and ice storms are common, along the East and Gulf Coasts, hurricanes are far more common. Consider what you will need should one of these disasters strike. During hurricane recovery, power may be broadly out for 3-5 days. Tell them to plan for that.
- I noticed a picture of the Emergency Essentials bucket but I'm surprised no mention of the Mountain House camping food as it's something that serves dual purposes, camping and emergencies. And it's somewhat compact.
- You might also want to mention in the section on starting off small that acquiring one or two extra cans of your regular food when you go shopping is a good way to build up a multi-day reserve of what you normally eat anyway.
- One thing wife unit likes is that we now have backup everything in the everyday use department - toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc. so if we do "run out" all we have to do is open another bottle, not stand in the shower getting PO'd that we forgot to buy something at the store last time. Double Bonus!
- The having "a good bit of cash" is an excellent, if often overlooked, aspect of readiness. You might mention that in addition to using it to buy needed items, it's very likely in an area-wide power disruption that neither ATMs nor credit-card processing will be available. Cash may be the ONLY way to get what you need.
- I liked the picture with the caption "When a large number of people are without power, food and water bad things can happen." I wonder if more images from Katrina would help sell this notion.
- On the use of a deep-cycle battery and inverter, one of the seldom mentioned items is that some sensitive electronics don't like generator power. Wife's laptop didn't. In addition, things like a CPAP machine really need to be kept running through the night and probably don't belong on a generator that can run out of gas at some random point.
- No mention of BOB in the article and why you should have one. There's a picture and a caption that would infer such a thing, but not really spelled out. If you have to leave in a hurry, being able to take a 3 day unplanned vacation without worry is a huge relief.
- No mention of pets and preparing for them. All your kittehs are going to starve. Or kill you for your preps. The joke's on them since all your pictures are of stuff that requires opposable thumbs to use.

I'm glad to see this type of thing in SGN. I'm sure that there are folks that like to read about the 1898 Bobblehead Over-Under-Double-Quad barrel rifle-blunderbuss used in NeverHeardiStan, but I have to believe this is going to bring more "mainstream" readers to (a) read SGN and (b) begin to think about "prepping" not as something unusual but as something abnormal if you don't.

I read it. A good "basic" prepping article. I would also like to see more prep related stuff in SGN.

I think it is an excellent introductory article. You have touched on a number of important issues and this sets up a future series of articles to look at them in depth. As others have already stated, evaluating your individual circumstances is essential, but preparations for various emergencies can often overlap. Getting people to think is more important than just giving them a list, just as inspiring them to practice with what they have is more beneficial than acquiring lots of gear. Once you have tried it out, you know what gaps need to be filled.

Where does one buy SG news if it only comes in print? Haven't ever seen it in a retail setting. Would like to read the article.

Finer book stores, and of course Walmart

Two that I shop at carry it, the third does not (of course that was the one I stopped at Saturday morning after work) so I still do not have a copy.
