THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Just for shits and giggles, I removed the containers I store in my chest freezer and refrigerator freezer when they start to get low in food….we went on a large shopping run and needed the space back. So instead of letting them melt, I did some half ass tests.

Enjoy….perhaps

Ice block test

Time to freeze?

Tap water at 2:10pm

Frozen solid time: 24hrs
1:45pm next day

____________________________________________________________________________________

Time to thaw in fridge (dorm room size, at lowest setting)?

put in fridge 1:45pm 5-6

frozen, yet defrosting stage at 7 days....too thawed to refreeze (if it were food). Could refreeze at day 4, as more than ¾ was still frozen.

________________________________________________________________

Time to defrost in cooler? In my best cooler (Igoo 40qt) laundry room (no A/C) approx 80 degreees, no direct sunlight.
Occasionally air conditioned when door was open (no longer then 10 min at a time) sometimes 85, when doing laundry.

2 frozen one gallon square icecream containers (water)
2 frozen three liter pop bottles (water)
1 frozen 64oz gator aid bottle (water)

6-09-2012 2:00pm 23f
6-10-2012 2:00pm 36f
6-11-2012 7:00pm 43f
6-12-2012 9:00pm 51f

Did not open cooler for 4 days: Day 4 9:00pm lid was opened to check contents (51f before right opening):

2 frozen one gallon square icecream containers (water) = still a chunk of ice floating, about the size of a bread plate.

2 frozen three liter pop bottles= completely melted, cool to the touch
1 frozen 64oz gator aid bottle= completely melted, cool to the touch

As mentioned, we are talking about solid chunks of ice, not cubed ice or the typical 1lb hamburger...etc that would melt faster.

Moral of the story, get a generator if you don't already have one....or plan on eating,canning,drying...etc your food in three days without refrigeration or stocks of ice.

Blackoperations Thanks for your efforts.

I use the ice blocks as inexpensive insurance against a short power outage. Short IMO is less than 3 days.

Ice blocks are no substitute for a generator or "solar freezer" but each tool has a place.

Blackoperations... during the 2005 hurricane season, I was without power for about 7 days....my 5 day coolers gave me an extra day over your test, but I had more ice to start, I had (4) 1gal frozen jugs in each cooler.. Emergency Management ice was available as soon as the wind died down here in Pasco County...I did invest in a 3500w Honda though, and a small 5cu ft freezer

PA22-400 did you get a BYU solar funnel to freeze ice... I tried, but was unsuccessful...

BYU solsr funnel = wait wut ... might google that one someday

My plan for a "solar freezer" = Solar Array + deep cycle battery bank + engel freezer http://www.engel-usa.com/

The panel battery engel plan is not cheap, which is why I have not got the components.

I only have about $50 of frozen food anyway so I would have to have 20 power failures that cost me the contents of my freezer to equal the cost of a Honda EU200i

the BYU solar funnel, solar oven in daytime, and at night radiates heat energy into space (a couple of degrees above absolute zero) ... IIRC they are able to freeze water with a 60 degree ambient air temp...my Honda is an older non inverter type and was basically given to me..

are you talking about a Ammonia Absorption Icemaker?

I read a article online about it, its in a PDF version. Basicly a large solar reflector focused onto a tube filled with ammonia that heats up the ammonia which in turn cools a coil down below freezing to generate ice. Its a rather complicated setup, and large for a small amount of ice....but it is pretty cool stuff.

Blackoperations... no, this is a direct radiation experiment.... the funnel shape produces something like a vertical line focal point, that the cooking vessel is place on, enclosed in a anti convection/conduction cooking bag...during the day, the apparatus is self orienting to the Sun...if the process is reversed at night, and the funnel aimed at a non ground illuminated portion of the night sky, the heat is radiated back into space, which is very cold at a couple of degrees above absolute zero...a couple of students at BYU were getting ice with a double bagged sample... check out BYU Solar funnel cooker... I'm a retired science teacher, and may have to play a little more with this...

ok....found this http://www.free-energy-info.co.uk/Oven.pdf

He found that the temperature of the air inside the funnel dropped quickly by about 15º F (8º C), as its
heat was radiated upwards in the clear sky. That night, the minimum outdoor air temperature measured
was 47.5º F (8.6º C) - but the water in both jars had ICE.

I think that if I really want or need ice then I would still be better off to go with a solar panel and the Engel freezer.

I think the BYU kids got lucky and made a small bit of ice. If they didn't have a lot of ice in the jar to begin with

of course, you are correct on the practical side...I've been on the lookout for a small RV ammonia and water absorbton refrigerator for a while, will find one someday...like commented, I really don't have that much in value of the food, but as a convenience...I buy a couple of large Italian subs if a storm is forcast to be a problem, and live off them for a couple of days....is there a deal on the Engel refrigerators here in the US, or did you get yours from Australia?

I do not have an Engel....maybe someday I will have an Engel...Paul has an Engel that he has posted about back in maybe 08 or 09

There are several dealers for Engel here in the USA that market to RVers, truckers, or boaters

I have even seen Engel for sale in some of the FL craigslist
