I have let myself get in terrible shape.

Been meaning to do something for a while.
But i'm a born procrastonator when it comes to things i don't really care for and the fact i love good food and everything else thats bad for you.
I've put it off forever.

Started changing it 4~ weeks ago. quit smoking 2packs a day ~ ok i'm using an electronic one for now but i can already tell a diffrence i'll kick it eventually.
Started eating less than half my normal intake of food Monday of last week.
Joined a gym started working out yesterday.

Turned 42 last month I'm 5'10" 235 now............My goal is to be 190~ and in much better shape cardio and weight lifting by the end of the year.
I have no desire to be "skinny" it's not me i was skinny 24 yrs ago
I figure it'll enable me to fight zombies a little better or maybe ad a year or two to my stay on earth if i don't get hit by a bus.

A picture of my ninja socks for a special someone on arfcom............ you know who you are
I think i need new scales for my pictures lol as ugly as they are they are dead on with the gyms
My ego won't let me post the rest of the before pictures untill i make some significant change.

I only use my guns when kindness fails

It's never too late to make a positive change. Your well being both physically and mentally will increase drastically and your motivation will increase drastically as you start to see the results of our hard work. Stay with it and never look back. Just remember its not just a short term change, it's a lifestyle change. The human mind can convince the body to accomplish anything

Good luck! When you don't want to work out, GET OFF YER ASS AND DO IT ANYWAY!!! The Zombies won't wait!!!

Seriously though, good on you for making changes. I'm in the same boat... sort of. I don't weigh a smuch, but, if I keep eating like I was, then I would be... so I'm cutting back on the amount of food I'm sucking down my gullet... for the last week or so it's been chicken breast for dinner and lunch and as much salad as I can tolerate... and I'm trying to shrink that down too. I'm tired of eating so much food as I was before.

Way to go! I'm right there with ya. I'm 5'9" and weighed 220 at my last doctor visit. (245 was my all time high.) Shooting for below 180 by the end of the year. My wife and I have been walking a mile a day for the past 2 weeks and I can feel the difference already. Just got some dumbells in and will be using those 3 times a week as well.

Have you made changes to your diet as well? That's the sticking point for me. I love to eat and my wife is a dang good cook. We've cut out fried foods for the most part. We're eating more chicken and vegetables, less carbs. Heck, just cutting out my coke-a-day habit should help me lose a pound or two.

An app for my phone that has helped me drop about 15 pounds is called MyFitnessPal.

It's basically just a calorie counter. You enter your current weight, and your weight loss goals, and your desired weight. It calculates an ideal calorie amount per day.

As you eat, you enter the food in. The app has an extensive database, so if you eat at Olive Garden, it knows how many calories are in the Chicken Marsala.

You can also scan barcodes and enter food that way.

You also enter your exercise for the day. Run 3 miles in 24 minutes, add 400 calories ( or whatever it is) to your total of the day.

As long as you stay under the calorie limit for the day, you'll lose weight.

Good luck.

Now remember. having a little fat on you is good for a SHTF situation!

I hope just walking works for you it does for some people. It wouldnt for me before i hurt my knee on the last hike we did. I was walking 2~ 6 miles a night with a 45lb pack.
I lost a few pounds but then it just stopped.

Like i said eating less than half my normal amount. No sugar.... low fat.
I know i should be counting calories and some kind of "diet" but when i try to read that stuff it rattles in my head.

Meh good luck with the coke thing............ I used to drink 1case yes 24 regular cokes a day........... Halffast convinced me to go diet ... My mom swore i would drop weight like mad.
I never lost a freaking pound.

I've cut the diet cokes back to about 8 a day and a pot of coffe (not having my carmel white choclate creamer and 4 tablespoons of sugar is extremely tough)
My "cheat" day is sunday and i'm about to enjoy the hell out of the creamer ..... Halffast told me i needed to quit the sugar completely so i'm done unless it's in something i don't know about.

eta coffe n hand I'm going to they gym

Good luck acman. About 4 yrs ago my son was right where you are now, he was 26 and weighed 265 lbs was your height and smoked. He stopped smoking lost the weight very slow got his but in shape. He has always been a broad shoulder person and will never be skinny. He now weighs between 195 and 200 lbs looks great and feels great. Just take it slow when taking the weight off, ask yourself this question, how long did it take to get this way? You want to do this the correct way and not have to do this again.

I'm 43, 5'11, and at a doctor's appointment 2 weeks ago I weighed in at 280. That was it! I'd had a Planet Fitness membership since right after Xmas but had only been a couple times. Well, I've been going for a couple hours every day, hitting the weights for an hour and then doing an hour on the elliptical. I already feel better, and along with my change of diet (minimal processed or added sugars, a lot more protein and fiber, more fruits & veggies, less fat) I've lost 8lb in the past 2 weeks. I can't go today because all my sweats are FUNKY and I can't do laundry till later, but I'll just do some extra tomorrow.

The biggest issue for me is eating healthy is EXPENSIVE compared to eating stuff that's not very good for you. Reading all the labels on food is a pain in the ass as well, but the good thing is that once you find foods with the best nutrition content and least sodium, trans fats, sugar, etc, you can just stick with that. There's always buying ingredients and making stuff yourself instead of buying prepared foods.

hell man you've seen what a fat fucking slob I am, turned 42 last summer;

the summer of 01' I weight 265lb, bench pressed 355lbs and could hunt/walk/work a hard physical job all day, day in day out and play hard every bit of free time I had.

then I had a oji in nov 01', surgery in jan 02' and didn't work again until dec 04'; spent that whole time sitting around watching tv and eating fast food, chips, cookies and snacks everyday like mad I put on nearly 150lbs.

since going back to work I've been up and down weight wise, I'd loose 50lbs put back on 60lbs eating like a hog; smoking two+ packs a day, drinking cup after cup of free coke, coffee, sweet tea etc etc.

last year I cut back on the smokes to less than a pack a day, cut back on the cokes/sweet tea to one a day (this is damn tough), still drinking at least a pot of coffee a day though, damn it's the toughest, I drink coffee when I get up, when I get to work and when I get off work and again after dinner.

in nov of last year I decided to cut back on the groceries too, quit eating most fast/junk food(still eat pizza a couple times a month) and bread; every day since nov I have a small salad and 6oz of either beef or chicken.

don't know exactly how much I've lost, but my pants are fitting a bit looser, I've had to tighten my belt by two notches, need to start back hitting the gym, at the very least walking a couple miles a day to start;

hell right now if I had to go back to doing physical laborious job 8+hours a day I'd either struggle like mad to make it everyday or stroke out right away.

had several full physical/blood/UA lab work recently; the doc says I'm borderline diabetic and high bp (bp was 128/80 last visit but has been as high as 146/94); got high cholesterol and all the other bullshit that goes with it;

the doc says besides being an extremely fat motherfucker I hadn't hit the point of no return yet, but I'd better get my fat ass in gear and start making changes or I'm going to start having some serious fucking health issues pdq.

Dammit AC, now I am gonna have to do the same thing. The kid went from near 270 to about 22o, running 4 miles a day and lifting. It'll be a while before I catch up to that.. I'm 5'8" and 220, should be 175 or so.

Good luck with it bro, a little less food and a bit more exercise will do it. Maybe we should have a contest. biggest loser wins..

I cut out soda, candy, and eat nomore than 2000 calories a day, sometimes less than 1800.

I run two miles a day, 20-30 situps, and 30 pushups. I am going to start jump rope.

It doesn't take long to get results.

LOL it's still unopened.............. it and 1800 are something i could only drink with certain people now.
It's horrid to think i might never ever take another drink of rum or 1800 again

I may need some help with the food thing if i'm not seeing/ feeling some change in a few weeks.
It just seems so complicated to me............
Right now i don't have any problem not eating much.

The thought i could loose the nickname DB is enough for that
My ipod is just a constant loop of "so hot" by kid rock(you gotta listen just once to the unedited version)........ makes the cardio workout not to bad.

Glad to hear about SBK.
I'm going to do a relatively physical contractors course at 43 and be smoked because i gave it my all not because i'm out of shape.
I hope you find a reason to get motivated. It's hard to do this kind of stuff if you aren't into working out and i'm not.

ac what worked for me was this.

eat less, drop the junk.

by this i mean , no fast food, no processed crap or junk.
maybe no more beer( killer for me)

I also swapped in filler foods ( protien shakes with low carbs/low sugars) yogurts, vitamins, and snacked alot.
I ran 2+ miles each day plus 15 mins of cardio work before work. ( injury now so i cant) but i lost 15+ lbs the 1st two weeks and 1-3 lbs per week after that. most going from fat to muscle. Now that im hurt it went the other way. i burned off muscle and fat and sit around 223-224lbs now(at 5'10).
i went down 4+ belt notches and 2 shirt sizes....in other words from an XL bdu to a large..i can wear medium poly pro bottoms and a large top.....my work uniforms went from a 42 to a 38 with room lots to move.....ive donated off a ton of clothing.

what i found is after a month or more or "de toxing" the crap out of yourself ( carbs, sugars etc) you can add some back lil at a time and have it not effect you.
beer is an instant weight gain for me.

i had my 1st doughnut and coffee in 9 months the other day..me and the wife thought my eyes were gonna buldge out and i go into a sugar comma

This is what i have done to an extent.
I've ate so little the last week i doubt it's even healthy.........best i can tell from looking back at it way less than 1000calories a day
I was probably eating at least 4k or more.
Friday i even resisted all the free doughnuts you can eat.......... i've never done that in my life

I'm lucky on the booze while some on here that i've drank with would tell you i can still pull a 4 day bender or get blackout puking drunk
and i love a drink n cigar every now and then
It just isn't something thats a strugle i can take it or leave it now..........

Did 50 minutes of cardio the last couple days hoping to have it up to an hr by the end of the week.........
idk i never been into this stuff so i'm reading what i can and trying to comprehend a little of it.....
I have a learning deficiency when it comes to something i'm not interested in........
i need someone to tell me exatly what to do and hand me what i need to eat but my wallet isn't fat enough for that

Way to go, guys!

I'm glad this is catching on. I've seen several threads on here and FS concerning people making improving their health a high priority.

+1 on the myfitnesspal. It is free. You can use the website, but the smartphone app is great. I've recorded my food intake for 165 days straight and have lost about 60 pounds since starting the app. MFP is just an excellent calorie tracker with online search capability. It is similar to the weight watcher point system. It allots you a given amount of calories every day to eat as you see fit. You just have to budget your food intake. If you like a big supper, you can eat a big supper, but you'd better be careful earlier in the day. My only recommendation is go online and change the ratios to a higher protein diet. If anyone wants a MFP "friend", send me an IM. Maybe enough of us could start a group of some sort.

I'm running now and this is a first in my life. This time last year I couldn't run half a mile without stopping. Yesterday, I completed a local 5K in 30:06. I also just recently started a lifting program. I've got a long way to go, but I've got nothing but time...........

Good luck, man. I hate workouts with a passion. I hate going to the gym, I hate being at the gym, I hate doing stuff at the gym...but a half hour oafter the workout, when Im home and showered, I am *so* glad I went. It really will pay off. It doesnt matter what you do...CrossFit, PX90, running, ruck march, whatever....just do something and have the discipline to keep doing it.

Acman, 1000 calories a day is not enough for a big guy. Your body will consume your lean body mass to fuel the fires. My guess is you probably need to be eating 1800-200 calories per day. I weigh 210 and lose around 2 lbs per week on about 2100 calories per day.

One of the things that has been different for me this time is I consider this a change of lifestyle. In the past I have always crashed dieted. I could lose weight rapidly, but after a few weeks I'd go crazy and get off my diet. Then, I'd resume my old eating habits and regain the weight the following year. By taking the slow route, I'd had to change my bad habits and pick up good ones that will help me keep the weight off for the rest of my life. I do indeed view food a bit differently than before. Yes, it takes a long time, but we have plenty of it. Shoot for a diet you can live with the rest of your life if you have to. That's the one that you will stick with.
