Mr. Ragnar (Danneskjold, I assume) :

I saw this thread near the top and just thought Id let you know that a long time ago reading this thread really got the ball rolling for me towards the path im on. Seeing your preparedness level, mindset, and kit; some of each were very different from what I had and what I had previously been exposed to.

It got me THINKING; and about a great many things.
Sure, I had water, a few cool (to me) guns, SEVERAL HUNDRED rounds of ammo, and the gut feeling that something was very wrong with the country/world.
But I had a very narrow SHTF scenario in mind.

I realized I was vastly under equipped to play either batman in the boondocks or shoot em up when "they" come a knocking.
I realized SHTF could be vastly worse any number of ways, and in any scenario my AO was so far up shit creek you couldn't buy enough paddles if you hit the lottery.
(Imported food, Imported water, economy dependent on tourism, no significant wild game, no soil, and a huge population DEPENDENT on electricity and society's teat)
My old home was going to be the OK corral at high noon.

I was scarred shitless for me and my toddler, and my entire mindset and outlook on life changed.

I thank you, and the ARF community for posting, It has significantly contributed to my family's improved safety.

Good info especially for frequent flyer travel types who are away from home a lot.

Why?

Because it is not another 'What's in your BOB?' thread filled with glamour shots of 87lbs of fab-tactical, brand-new/unused, silly gear.

This is a well-thought-out, proven 'system' of gear for a specific goal.

Thanks to all that have read this thread over the years, and thanks to all that contributed. I always hoped more people would add things, didn't happen to the extent I would have liked but it's still been a fun and educational exercise.

I haven't been doing very much airline travel the last two years, and prior to that I was in Iraq for most of three years, so honestly adding to this thread wasn't a priority.

My main "survival" focus has been twofold, first I'm very interested in social engineering, all aspects. Second I've been working on my home. I'm focussing on sustainable animals that I can have in suburbia. Rabbits, chickens, ducks, and geese right now. Also on gardening. And this summer I'll start canning vegetables and meats.

So I really don't have much to add to the thread at this time.

I have gone completely low pro, so no more tactical pack or cool guy jackets. I'm just wearing standard REI looking stuff.

Ragnar, several quick questions:

1. What ruck would you upgrade to?

2. What radio would you upgrade to?

A few useful links for items that I've picked up this trip and which have served me very well in the cold. This was a trip from DFW to Washington DC. In DC the temps were never higher than 27 degrees F and windy. At night it got down to 7 degrees F and still windy. I wished I had brought my sleeping bag liner should I have had a car breakdown. However, just my clothing alone inside a car should keep you okay even though not totally comfortable.

Immersion Heater

Easy to Make Hot Soup

Starbucks VIA

Down Vest

Optimus HE Pot Set

I now plan to start traveling routinely with good liner socks that can be worn under thicker wool socks or under dress socks depending on the dress requirements.Something like this

Not much need to haul food around. I picked that up when I landed at midnight and had a decent meal before hitting work at 7:00am the next morning.

I'm also thinking its okay to add an ultralight camp stove to the immersion heater. I can pick up gas cannisters at any time when traveling CONUS should additional heating and cooking items be useful. Something like this: I've already bought two and now think it can sail through TSA as long as you don't carry any gas cannisters. Just provides a second option for cooking outside the airport terminal when time is short and meals not easily obtained.
Ultralight and small backpacking stove

and a big +1000 for the tactical spork. I've gotten more use out of this than you can imagine. It just works and is the best $2.95 you'll ever spend.
Spork

I'm carrying my gear in a Kelty Redwing 44 that I got for $55 on sale at REI. They're roomy and still have space for my laptop and iPad with assorted cords. Anything that won't go into the Kelty can go into my carryon or if I'm checking bags it gets dropped into that.
Kelty Redwing 44
It fits underneath the seat while my carryon goes in the overhead compartment. Generally, never need to check bags and my stuff is always at hand. One item that goes everywhere with me and which doesn't attract attention is an EagleTac flashlight with beveled edge on the lens. Works great and never failed me. Change batteries once every 6 months as you see fit so its always ready to go. Next to the spork it gets the most use of all the things in my pack. EagleTac P20C2

It's been a while since seeing this thread. Thanks for bumping it ( and originally posting RAGNAR ).

When I first saw it it gave me some ideas and exposed some if my shortcomings in my kit(s). And the same result again this time.
I really gotta spend some time learning my way around radios for one example.

Cheers!

A rolled up lightweight messenger type bag can make a good "food bandoleer" if traveling by foot. I've been on the lookout for one lighter than my current canvas slim bag. It's rolled up underneath my go bag. I figure it can serve as a dump pouch/multipurpose pouch pretty well.

I've also compressed a few protein bars and rescaled them in a zip lock. They take up about the pack of cards in size.

Contribute a more than I have been,

But they are not expensive, put out a loud warning and I thought a very good idea.

Would work great in your home, hotel or put in a purse and clipped to a wrist strap.
I also think it would good for women who into areas that are not the best.
Just slip strap over the wrist and pull if needed.

I'll try to post pic's this weekend.

Yes.

The only thing I've ever had stop a smooth inspection was a water filter.  The cartridge doesn't look so good on the x-ray apparently.  But that was only once in the US and once while leaving Amsterdam and I fly pretty much weekly.

I did read the thread. I have a question for you, Does the TSA give you any scrutiny on any specific items when carrying this on?

I didn't see any prohibited items in his pack, besides anything with a blade (doesn't matter the size, blades area no-go. You can pull them off your multi-tools, however.) Keep your gels, liquids, and aerosols at or under 3.4 ounces, and you should be good to go.
