Wow! This one was tough to come by. Water has been lower than I have ever seen it in the winter. It is crystal clear and cold. The Steelhead have not wanted to play. Finally after 7 days of swinging I finally got one to eat! Now I want more!

Nice! Better than my last trip to the Clearwater back in Feb. I got skunked (had one on for all of 30 seconds) and broke the Meiser at the fourth guide from the top. The rod is currently back with them to be repaired.

I had an hour to swing on Wednesday so I hit the river. I was first into the run and two guys showed up, one an indicator fisherman and the other a gear guy. They both walked down right below me, fortunately when they saw my cast they asked if they could fish below me. I thanked them for asking and told them I would be stepping down 5 steps per cast because I didn't have much time. They both said no problem and stepped in above me. We were all talking while fishing and 8 casts later I hooked and landed a fish. It is great when we all work together to fish a run effectively.

I am on the river again tomorrow, I'll try to update with a picture of a bigger fish!

The river was on fire today. I landed 4 fish out of 6 runs. Here are 2 of the willing participants:

The upper fish was caught on a 6wt Beulah  onyx with a 450 Elixir and a pattern of mine. The lower fish was on a 7136 Sage One with a Rio 525 iFlight and an intruder.

The both fish were a perfect match to the rods.

Nice cork on the Buelah.  Cool fish too.

I liked the 6wt Onyx so much I picked up one of the 5wt Onyx spey rods yesterday. Today I hit the river and got a couple good hard tugs on the 5wt and hooked a good fish on the 6wt. These two rods are amazing! So much so I only fished the Sage One in the big deep buckets today.

Life on the swing is good!

Very nice!  Fishing is picking up here in the SW.  We got 4 big fat 18" browns and a 22" walleye trolling one of the local lakes.  My brown was delicious .

I got out to scout for this weeks client. I hit the jackpot on one spot and hooked 3 swinging and one on the nymph. There are some good size fish in the system this year.

One from yesterday:

Nice!

My recent "cast & blast" wasn't quite so glorious as yours: a couple of coyotes and searun cutties. I'll take what I can get though.

WOW! What a day! It is game time right now! My clients were on their A game today and hooked 16 adult fish. Some were really large and full of attitude! I love this time of year!

Nope, Rogue River. These clients were on it that day and the fish were in all the right places. The next two days with the same anglers were normal days hooking 7-8 fish/day. The season has been good but I am ready for a break! tomorrow is my first day off since mid September. I am going gun shopping!

Yesterday my client landed the very first adult steelhead of the fall season! A bright and fresh wild hen of 21".  The best part of it was he had never touched a fly rod prior to yesterday! He is one lucky sob... This is the earliest we have landed an adult fall fish. The removal of the two dams downstream of us has really changed things for the better.

Let the games begin!

I sometimes envy you guys out west, you have a much longer season.
The first steelhead of fall is usually in October here. Then by Nov or maybe Dec we are done as the ice forces us out of the river.
But on the up side we have LARGE browns and cohos also.
A couple of pictures of big browns

Last one is the biggest brown I've gotten. Approx 35-36"
Biggest Brown I know of caught in the river I fish is 39"
They are not as much fun as a steelhead but they break up the day.

I little love from today. One of the largest steelhead a client has landed. An epic battle on a 7wt!

While this wasn't technically a first fish, it was the first fish a client landed this season. Unfortunately the fish escaped before a hero shot could be taken. This one was a pig and it kicked both of our asses before being landed!Attachment Attached File

Well, I didn’t land it but I did hook my first of the season a week ago. The stonefly hatch is on so I was fishing a glass 4wt when a very nice fish ate the dry fly. Needless to say, the battle was epic. If I had remembered the net I could have landed the fish.

If I could figure out how to post an image from this iPad you would get a good look at how deep you can bend a glass rod.

Post up you first steelhead of the season! I can’t wait to land one!
