I don't know anything about fly fishing but I am wanting to get into it. My friend just gave me an old rod made by AL&W, it's a 8' 5" 3 piece fiber glass rod. He didn't have the reel for it but he is looking. I am just wondering what vintage reel should I be look for to be able to use this. I am also looking at buy a new rod and reel to learn on but thought this would be cool to use as well. Thanks for any info you can give me.

I'd go with a Pflueger Medallist.  It was the standard reel for eons.  You'll want to find out what weight flyline the rod was built for to get the sized reel that balances the rod out well.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that the rod had the info on it but the numbers were rubbed off. I will look into the reels you mentioned.
