Do you have any prior fly fishing experience? If so, go cast some rods and pick up one you like. If not, casting before you buy won't make much difference. I like Cabela's for inexpensive rods, specifically their fiberglass series. However, I find those rods a little unforgiving so they might not be the best rod for a beginner. Their rods are good quality, good action, and you can't beat their return policy. As far as reels go, I'm of the opinion that they just hold line. You probably don't need to go over $75 for a starter reel. Cabela's, Orvis, and LL Bean have some inexpensive reels. I started out on a Pfluger Medalist and I'm kinda disappointed they discontinued them, they were only like $30 and bomb proof. Your fly line is where you don't want to skimp. It'll save you a ton of time and frustration if you get a good/top quality line to start out with. I like Scientific Anglers. Hope that helps.

You'll have more fun if you aren't getting frustrated by the casting mechanics and you probably won't have bad casting habits if you keep with it. |
