I remember seeing that sculpin pattern tied like a Clouser. . .
A few years back, I would use a Sculpzilla to mimic a sculpin. They were somewhat time consuming to tie and I hated losing them. You tie them with those super sharp Gamakatsu stinger hooks on a Waddington shank. A fly tyer’s tip to trim a bunch of marabou is to just “pinch and rip” the excess material away. Just remember that there is a stinger hook sometimes hidden in the material. . .    Attached File |

First permit Belize 2021. Grand slammed first day and had 3 permit on(1 to hand 2 to boat). 10+ quality shots it was pretty crazy.
Need a bigger one now

Nice permit and steelhead!
I’ve been tying a lot of Clouser’s lately and just wanted to mention this fly tying tip. If you use a lot of the white portion of a bucktail, it’s hard to not get the natural brown/tan stray fibers in there when you clip a portion off. Whether you’re tying just a handful or 10 dozen, it’s nice to just grab for the portion of white bucktail. Clouser utilizing white:  Attached FileNatural bucktail:  Attached FileThe backside of a bucktail. Do you see where there is a light colored section and a dark colored section? Trim using a razor knife along the line where light (white hair) meets the dark (brown hair):  Attached FileYou’ll now have two strips that will just have the white hair. It was a nice day out today. It was a slow day of fishing on Sunday and the winds were too high to go out yesterday. Today was a good day. Four roosterfish larger than 50 lbs and some dorado.
I am done with Hatch fly reels though. The drag failed on another Finatic 9+ and one of the spools is now rubbing the frame. Sure, reels at this price point fail every now and then but it’s still a bummer when you’re on a trip. I am a big fan of drawbar cork feels like the Abel Super series. I canned the Hatch and am switching over to a spare Abel SDS (sealed) this afternoon on one of my rods. I love Mako reels as well. . . they give you confidence. The sardinas down in Baja were large (4-5”) and fat and there was a lot of bait in the area.I was using tan/white baitfish patterns but this probably would’ve worked better. . . Dark grey up on top with a line of tan/olive/chartreuse:

I use a sinking tip and change the tips to fit water situations. I use small 1/40 oz barbells. In shallower spots no sinking tips, in deep stuff heavy sinking tip. The pattern looks good. I have tied many similar stuff. Over the years I have migrated to simpler patterns/easy ties. We all end up with our go to flies. |

Do you find that stripping ALWAYS works better than just swinging the fly? I agree that it works better for Browns and cohos but Steelhead seem to like swung flies at times. At least thats been my experience. Have you ever used a 2 fly setup? Larger streamer followed by a nymph or egg pattern. I have caught many steelhead on stripped or swung egg patterns and small nymphs. My preferred way is a switch rod swinging/stripping streamers. I have done the beads under bobbers and while its deadly its also requires high concentration, gotta watch that float with an eagle eye. It can get tiring. Nothing better than steelhead tho. |

I have the 7134 and the 8134. . . I would love to have another Burkheimer like the 3113 but I just picked up the Sage TS HD in 3110. There is just something about a Burkheimer and the way that they cast and feel in the hand. When you’re carrying a rod around all day, it’s nice to have something that feels good in your hands and is a pleasure to look at. A nice day on the Rogue today. Five steelhead, some trout and a nice cutty. I had some tugs while swinging but the landed fish were all on nymphs.

You guys are catching fish I can only dream of. Lots beauties here.
My son and I are nust getting in to fly fishing after years of fresh water bait fishing. So far, we’re really enjoying it and understand its appeal.
