I'm looking for a decent, all-around, sit on top kayak in the $500 or less range. (I may go used so higher retail prices are welcomed)

I live in Florida so I need something that I can fish out of, paddle 7 miles up river against a 4 knot current, across a lake, or inshore fishing. Scuba/snorkeling off of it would also be nice.
Comfort is always a plus. I'm 6' 220.

Man, so many choices, only down side is even used $500 is going to be a little low for what you seek.
If you can find a good used one, Ocean Kayaks makes one called the Prowler 13.
Lots of room, stable in surf, and has pretty good stability.
The other nice thing is it's rated for 400-450 pounds.

Here's the specs on it...

Here ya go, found this on the Florida Craigslist, not a bad price and close to what you want to pay.
I have no idea where Tequesta is though!

If money was not an issue it would be this for me.

I'm going to look at a 14' Necky Dolphin for $500 in the morning. It's an older model, but every review I've read on it so far says that it was one of the best fishing kayaks ever built. The only negatives I found was that it felt a little 'tippy' until you got use to it.

Good deal or not?

"14foot ocean kayak with spot for dive tank manufacturer is necky, model is dolphin made in Canada.with paddle, seat, fishing pole holder and set of wheels, and life vest."

Doesn't look like that Necky has much storage for a tank. You might be hard-pressed at that price point.

fwiw I love my Native Slayer. If nothing else the seat is phenomenal. I can't stand the molded plastic crap that kills your ass after an hour or so. I can easily stand for sight fishing. I bought it since I fly fish and it's one of the cleanest boats (few obstacles to snag your fly line).

That seems to be a pretty big negative considering the type of kayaking you described in your OP.
Especially if you start getting into any kind of surf or wave action.

I've got a Field and Stream Eagle Talon 12.  Got it on sale at Dick's (I know, I know) for 350 (normally 550 or so).

It's my first and I'm liking it a lot.  The stock seat SUCKS, replaced mine with one from Austin Kayak - much mo betta.

Anybody have any thoughts on the Perception Pescador Angler 12'? Academy had it on sale for $400 from $550. I've never owned a kayak but am looking to get into kayak fishing. Same as the OP, I want to stay around $500 but if the $1,000 - $1,400 are that much better, my mind (wallet) might be swayed.

Thanks in advance.

Perception makes a darn good kayak and the Pescador has a big fan base.
For that price I'd get it.

Perception is a good unit.

I too bought from Dicks, Field and Stream. New seat came a few days ago.

Found the Ascend FS12T a couple of days ago at Bass Pro Shop. Moved to the top of my list!

I'm looking at four kayaks right now. Placed in order of current want (I change my mind a lot)

1. Ascend FS12T - $550
2. Ocean Kayak Prowler 13' Angler - $700
3. Perception Pescadoror Angler 12' - $550
4. Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game II - $1,300 (hard to justify)

Anyone have any thoughts/opinions? I've watched almost every Youtube video without actually sitting in any of them.

Love my Ascend!
For the price it's a heck of a kayak.
Wide, stable, and pretty fast for it's size.
Has plenty of room to store gear in the hull with a wide lock down hatch, and a smaller dry hatch just big enough for cell phone and keys.
Oh, and the seat is one of the most comfortable I've ever had on a yak.
One downside is due to the seat design it does tend to bend the back bolts on the seat, the cure?
Cut a piece of pool noodle to fit the rear leg and it eliminates the problem.

One other thing is it is sort of heavy, mine stripped weighs in about 70 pounds.

Wife's kayak is the Ocean Drifter.

Stable enough to take a 100 pound dawg for a ride.

You're going 7 miles against a 4 knot current? Most people struggle to do 3 mph in a kayak. You might end up going BACKWARDS.

i'd buy a small boat with a motor.

Just do it and thank me later. Actually, last year I picked one up from ACK in a package with a paddle and vest for under $1400. I've been very happy with it.

I'd look for a used Jackson. There are several models that can be found used at good prices if you're patient.

I've been waiting about 3 years for a used Jackson.

I have saw them quite often on Craigslist around Knoxville and especially out around cookeville. They're made in Sparta. I see the owner occasionally out in middle TN. He's got a sweet older LandcruiserI'm actually considering trying to find a used Big Tuna when money allows to get the wife and kid into it.

In the same boat. Narrowed it down to the ascend fs12t and the h12 hybrid. Both have jam up reviews and standing is something it's made for.

We just picked up a used (barely) Pescador 10 on Craigslist for my wife.  So far it seams little a really nice little kayak and we're very happy with it.  I've got several ideas for it over the next several weeks.  We've had them out together a couple of times now.  Our two ~50 lb kids ride around in the backs of them...enjoying that while it lasts, lol.

I have an Ocean Kayak Trident 13 and I love it.  It's very stable and easy to paddle.  Even with a fairly easy paddle I make decent ground.  Put the back into it and you can cover some distance quickly.  I'm replacing my Lowrance Mark 4 Pro with a Garmin Striker 4dv, which should be here Tuesday...then I'll be able to see what kind of speeds I get out of it.

The Trident was expensive, yes, but worth every penny to me.  The Pescador was a night and day difference in price (even new), but I still feel like the big 13' was well worth it, especially when on large lakes.  The storage capabilities and large hatches are awesome.  The Pescador's hatches are rather small, which limits what you can put in the hull, but is still a nice kayak.  If you're not looking to spend a lot, then that Pescador 10/12 would be a really great kayak.

Also, I'm not sure if it has been posted already, but:  http://www.austinkayak.com/

I hit a kayak shop while out on a trip today, and bought some more padeyes and bungee to spruce it up a bit.  Over time, I'm planning to fix it up into a sweet little boat.

4 knot current?  I have a zippy Santa Cruz Raptor.  Fastest speed i can wring out of it, in a sprint, is 4.5 mph. My steady cruise speed is just under 3 mph.
