THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I don't really go on a boat all that often so I never really looked at the state laws so I'm no really sure about something/

I know that you have to have a life jacket for every person on a boat, but you have to always wear it.

All I really have is a IV PFD, 2 of them on my 12 john boat that I paddle once in a while. I sometimes take it to a lake or something like that.

I don't have any lights or anything like that.

what do I have to have and what don't I really have to have?

I only go in freshwater so I'm not really worried about the ocean.

Thanks

Copied from their regs..

Recreational vessels are required to display navigation lights between sunset and sunrise and during periods of reduced visibility (fog, rain, haze, etc.).

So you must carry navigation lights on board. They make "clamp-on" nav lights similar to a flashlight with proper color caps on them.
When anchored, the white stern light (white) should be on and visible in all directions.

The coastal waters reference is for "Visual distress signals" , they mean flares and marking dye and the like. You do not need to carry these on inland waters.

It appears only children under 6 must wear a lifejacket, but only when underway. Anchored, beached or docked they may remove them.
