Really depends on what you're after...the keys are incredible..even got married in islamorada because it was tarpon time

I mostly fish out of Wilmington NC which I'd also put very high on the list.  OBX in winter/spring for bluefin as well..

I've never ocean fished and looking forward to it as I'm moving to NC soon.
I've fished MN for 50+ years and probably have caught every fish there is here
and can identify them all.

I'm in for a HUGE learning curve. I don't know the regs., species, what to eat what not
to eat and what will kill me. I just hope I survive the whole experience.

Go with a guide a few times targeting different species, most will have a wealth of knowledge they will freely share with you except where their favorite spots are. If you go off or near shore from NC there are a lot of opportunities, especially around the Outer Banks. Big saltwater stripers are a popular target for surf fishing, you may catch some bluefish while striper fishing so be aware that they have a mouthful of extra sharp teeth so don't lip one with your thumb in its mouth!

Early welcome to the Tar Heel State.  You can handle the freshwater species easily.  As for saltwater it is a different ballgame.  The inshore fishing(behind the barrier islands) is not that much different than freshwater.  Red Drum, Black Drum, Speckled trout, Flounder, small sharks, Tarpon in the summer months and assorted other small fish.  Offshore is everything else.  I would suggest fishing with a guide on the inshore to learn and charter a boat for offshore.  There are alot of good guides and charters up and down the NC coast.

Oh and Tin Spinner brought up a good point not to lip a fish.  Blues will cut the crap out of you but there are others like barracudas that will take off an unwanted appendage real quick.

Fished the Keys many times since my first trip in '73. But my favorite spot has to be fishing out of Bokeelia, Florida. Coming out of Shell Cut or Jug creek early in the morning is like being a kid in a candy store. Head for Burnt Store flats for Snook or reds? Bull and Turtle bays are just a 20 minute run across Charlotte Harbor. Run west and jump Poons in the pass? Head offshore for Snapper or Red and Gag grouper? Run south a few minutes and fish for trout and reds on the quite literally endless flats of Pine Island sound? Walk the dog for snook in Captiva and Redfish pass? Bokeelia is a truly Remarkable place to fish out of.

I'd have to say I'm prejudiced. Wrong Island in Newyorkistan has two coasts and Bays Galore. It is 1/2 way to the canyons. We can fish from fresh to salt.
Tuna and Shark to blues, black and Stripers.

When you start comparing areas it gets to be a apples and oranges type of thing because best means different things to different folks.

Yeah the Keys have all sorts of stuff . I will give you guys that and I have enjoyed myself down there .

Here in Long Island Sound we have Bluefish , Striped bass from boat or the beach , Flounder , Fluke ,Weakfish , Blackfish . If you know somebody with a big boat or hit the charters we are in range of several tunas including giants , Mahi-Mahi , some Swordfish and several sharks including Great Whites along with Cod and some Halibut . Lots of other stuff as well . Now we have the weather to deal with and lots of the mentioned stuff is very seasonal  but when it is warm enough to be out on the water there is usually something around .

One of the beauties of Long Island Sound is it is fairly protected and not just a rich mans playground . Yeah , there are lots of big dollar boats but on most days the fishing is being done by all sorts of small and medium trailer boats dragged out of somebody's back yard

Northern Bahamas. As far as I'm concerned they belong to us. Shorter trip than the Gulf of Mexico middlegrounds. Before it was *ahem* discouraged many fisherman on the East Coast would run over for day trips. Now they want their pound of flesh to fish 50 miles from dry ground. Bahamian customs gets $150 or $300, even if you never wanted to come close enough to see land.

It's like the prehistoric over there. Trophy size fish that have never seen a human. You can swim right up to them with a polespear and nail 'em before they realize you're a threat.

Depends. I'm a huge fan of s.fl.

Miami for tarpon, port st lucie for snook, keys for grouper and bonefish, and the list goes on

LA is awesome too.

I haven't fished at all since I moved to NC, especially since I am now boat-less
