I have one that I use for muskey fishing. Its on a heavier pole. Its a great reel for its intended use. I find that they're over kill for normal weight lures and bass fishing. You always have to set the brake for the wieght of the lure, and then you have to stop the spool as soon as it hits the water, or you're going to get a backlash. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure with practice, there's less room for error, but with a typical spinning reel you dont have those issues. Plus I feel I can place a lure better, and cast many more ways with a spinning rod/reel.
Its all preference. I cant say one is better, as I'm sure there are dudes that can out fish me with a baitcaster. I just feel you can fish easier, with less skill involved and have the same results with a spinning reel. |

I have 3 of them. I love them
ETA–– I am WAY more accurate with a baitcaster than a spinning reel. |

I have a Shimano Calcutta 200 that I have been using for the last 19 years.
They can be a bit tricky at first so buy lots of line. The two biggest tricks are thumb control of the spool, and cast as if you are holding a rolled up newspaper under your arm. Don't whip the pole, nice and smooth. They also allow soft landing presentation of floating baits that cannot be done with any other kind of reel. |

Bait casting reels are great.
I have couple of Diawa and Shimano for bass fishing. I have couple of Abu Garcia 5500C, 6500C and 7000C for light and medium salt water fishing. |

I got my first one a few months ago.. i dont know why i waited so long!!!

I have a couple Diawa for Muskie Trolling but I use Spinning Reels (Old & New Mitchells) for Casting, I am trying to figure out a GOOD Bait Caster for Muskie but I have read some reviews on Reels and can't make up my mind, I have seen some bad reviews on $150 Reels and want to get a good, reliable one the first time.
Muskie can wreck some gear so it needs to be sturdy & smooth. |

But most are small, and loading up on that heavier mono will cut down your line yardage quite a bit. I've caught pike and tiger muskie up to around 36" on mine (I know muskies get bigger than that), but some of the salmon and steelhead I've caught were heavier. Not sure if they even make Calcuttas anymore but mine was $200 19 years ago. |

Avg Fish is 36"-42" and 15-22 Lb but there are some Monsters taken from here, it isn't like Minn. and Wisconsin but I don't want to take the chance of hooking a 40-50 Lb once in a life time fish and losing it due to a junk Reel. I am set on Trolling Rod/Reels but I need to find a Baitcaster Combo that casts good, dependable and won't wear me out cranking it in all day, so sort of looking for a high Gear Ratio and good Brake/Drag system. I am thinking of getting a new Honda 9.9 and when I do I will probably Troll 80% of the time then cast over the thick and heavy weed beds |

Most of the better quality ones will handle hard charging fish that size no problem. It'll be the line and pole you'll have to worry about.

That's my idea too, but I am trying to avoid the Shimano Corsairs of the Reel world, they were touted as high quality and cost $90-$100 and they were trash. Shimano ended up replacing them with a higher quality Reel for free because the Corsair was junk. So I am trying to find a Reel that will last, I don't care if it is $100 as long as it last over 6 months and doesn't need sent back every 3 weeks I think Shimano replaced the Corsair with either a Cardiff or Corvalis ? can't really remmeber. |

All I ever use are baitcasters, Shimano Calcutta 250's. They are superior to spinning reels in every way.
Baitcasting is really not difficult to learn, my sister picked it up in no time. Get yourself a good quality baitcasting reel (like the Calcutta) with adjustable spool brakes. When you start out, have all the brakes turned on, then as you develop an educated thumb you can turn off some of them and gain casting distance. |

I am going to buy the Calcutta 400B in a few days and pair it with a Shimano Compre 8' Rod in Heavy Action.
I used my Buddy's last week and DAMN was that set up nice |

I Been using them over 30 years.
You control the spool with your thumb. You also need to set the spool tension properly. With the reel in free spool, and the rod held at a 45 degree angle, you want the spool loose enough that the lure will steadily fall from the rod tip. You dont want it to fall fast, but a smooth steady drop. Keep your thumb on the spol when you cast for controol, youll get it with some practice. use soome bass casting sinkers of differant weights and practice in the yard. the 5500c is a older model, that will wrk well with heavyer lures. it might be hard casting lighter stuff with it. Reels have come a long way in just the last 10 years |

I just bought a new Shimano Calcutta 400B, now I am trying to figure out what Casting Rod to buy, I need a Heavy/Fast Rod in 8' length
I cast my Buddy's Shimano Compre Rod and it is a damn nice Rod but I am having a problem finding them in Stock & ready to deliver. I am going out to shoot Carp today with the youngest Son, I told him that it is time to fish for Muskies, piss on the Carp so this may be the last Carp trip for awhile |

It got it's pros and cons. I always take my spincast along with a baitcast. FOR ME, I can do some shots better with one and vise-versa.

Well I got a Pole to go with my Calcutta 400B, I let the youngest Son cast it the other day and BIRDS NEST
I got the tangle out at home. I have to get use to the heavy baits in the 3 oz to 10 oz range but I troll 85% of the time so I can work into it slowlyyyyyyyy |

I havent touched a spin cast reel since I was 8 or 9. Baitcaster all the way. I've got a reel from almost every major company(Shimano,Diawa,Abu Garcia) and I think for the money,I really like the higher end Quantum stuff. I just bought a Diawa MegaForce rod/reel combo for around $90. I really like that one too. I've talked myself out of spending over $300 on a rod and reel.

I caught a 50 inch musky using an Abu 6500. I have a few Abu reels, but I mostly use them for trolling now. Diawa Luna is a great reel and what I'm currently using for most of my casting.

yeh, you are good to use Braided Line, like I said I use 50 Lb Braided in either Power Pro or Spider Wire but I heard there is a new Braided on the Market for casting Poles, don't know the name but it is supposedly King Shit of Braided line now.
If I find out what the name is I will buy some and try it on my casting Pole but I will stick with the Power Pro or Spider Wire on my Trolling Poles |

OK, I called my buddy & he said the name of the new Braided line is "Vicious".
I never heard of it and have never tried it but I think I will get some in 50 Lb test and try it out, supposedly it is great for casting ? |
