Uncle and I are trying to train his mountain cur to coon hunt. He's about 15 months old has treed squirrels before on his own. We've also live trapped 3 coons and introduced him to them and then released them and he'll chase them up the tree and barking but won't get on the tree or even bark up at the coon in the immediate are around the tree. Today he watched it run up literally 5 feet from him and didn't do anything, just kind of milled around on the ground till we walked over. Any thoughts? Just not have it in him?

Thanks in advance

Take him out with a good treeing dog.

Don't shoot the coon out until he gets active on the tree with the other dog.

He'll figure out what needs to happen to get some fur in his teeth.

Hey thanks man! That's kind of what we were guessing the next step was but just wanted some reassurance! Now to find a good person with a good dog

Make sure the dog is good on the tree, if you get one that is slick or unsure of itself it's just going to reinforce more bad habits.

Remember, you want the hound to think it's only job is to track and tree, letting them get into a coon fight every now and then is just a perk for them, not their end goal. You can help drive that home by tying them back before you shoot the coon, and praising them once it's dead on the ground.
