Well. Considering a poorly bread dog can quickly end up cost 10 times that you may want to do a little research before making your decision.

Personally 600 sounds cheap.

I paid $1000 for mine. When I was looking prices ranged from 500 to 5000.

Expect to pay closer to $2000 for a quality GSD.

I know this is not a hunting application but I thought you guys might know the answer to this question.

I have a breeder with a new litter asking $600 per dog after they ween in a couple months.

Sounds crazy high to me.

Is that the going rate for a German Shepherd with papers?

Why does $600 sound crazy high to you? What's your frame of reference that brought you to that thought?

I ask because, just like has been pointed out already, that price isn't high at all. Quite the opposite really. Because you are looking for a working dog, I would recommend looking for a pup from a working stock with a history and pedigree that would point towards good potential in the litter. Additionally, better breeders will have health guarantees on their puppies, very often guaranteeing hips and elbows. The type of breeding required to produce that is not cheap.

Do some more research as there is a wealth of information online. Good luck in your search for a puppy. It's always exciting!

I paid around $100 for my German Shepard but she is by no means a pure bread

I also picked her up from the local shelter

$600 is not bad but I would double and triple check all paperwork and do background on the breeder as well if your that concerned about it.

Only $600 for a GSD would make me very nervous. Just looking at the cost for quality working line pups, either this breeder either doesn't understand economics, or didn't invest very much in obtaining top quality breeding stock.

I paid $1700 for mine. No real guard dog or high talent in his background.

Not high so long as the hips are good and certified as so by a vet.

I paid $600 for this tard a couple months ago. He is 5 months old and over 50lbs of dummy but we love him to death. It was $600 without breeding rights or $700 with from a group a polygamists here in Utah that breed them for security for their compounds. The parents were on site and looked great and were about 100lb's each.

He will mature, don't worry.

As previously discussed, $600 is alarmingly low for a premium working line GSD. The going rate for one is $1500-2000. Believe me the breeders aren't making a fortune on them, they're barely breaking even.  All of that in perspective, I know a great dog can be had for only $300. I have 2. It's all about getting a dog without major genetic defects that will serve you purpose. Only buy from a trusted source.
