Dad's first short haired fox terrier, a male named Foxy, did quite well at it. His second, a female, never quite took to it like Foxy. Old Foxy ran squirrels down in the woods a couple of times. He would even run up trees that were leaning over. He was a terror on just about any small animal: raccoons, groundhogs, possums, cats...he wanted to kill them all and if he couldn't kill them, he'd tree them. He would go into a frenzy if a squirrel was in a hollowed out tree. Running circles, barking, biting fallen branches... He wouldn't back down from anything, he took on a full grown redbone hound once. He had a limp for a while after that one. That dog was completely fearless and pure muscle. He was NOT kid friendly or cuddly.

Terrier. They're all good mousers, varmint hunters — it's what they were bred to do. Get a manly one though.

Lots of little dogs like to chase squirrels up trees. Problem is most of are dumb as shit and wont listen when yelled at.
Buy a lab, go duck hunting...... then buy a squirrel call and take the lab with you for fun. - Dave |

My rat terrier hunts squirrels, is trained to hunt them on command as well as flush out other game.
She never ranges further than a hundred yards, if that, and will call off the hunt on command. I even trained her to run up the side of a tree to about 6 feet. Many times a squirrel will run up about five feet and turn around to chitter at a dog. With my pup they get a big surprise. She is trained to keep her eyes in the branches as well as the ground. We sit together and I whisper "rat" while pointing to a squirrel say, 50 yards out, she follows my point and silently hauls ass using cover if possible to conceal her approach. She only makes noise once the squirrel is treed. Sounds unbelievable, but she is the best squirrel dog I have ever seen and is truly amazing to see in action. Squirrel games in the park usually attract a crowd of spectators. |

If you want to do squirrels and varmints... Patterdale terrier. When bred well they are crazy as hell though. They will grab a raccoon, badger, squirrel...whatever and hang on.

i was just about to say that...!!! Get a "Patterdale Terrier" man them little boogers are tuff as hell...!!! wont back down and they dont ever give up... very intelligent breed, so you shouldnt have any problem training it to hunt... they are natural hunters..!!! and can out run anything...!!! they wer bred to hunt fox and follow a fox into its own den, they have the jaw strength of a Pitbull but are only 15 to 20 lbs...!!! good with kids... and make a hell of a family dog..!!! but they need alot of excersize so be aware of that..!
they can jump high and climb trees and fenses... so make sure your ready to put in the home trianing... if you train it well it will be the best little 20lbs of explosive K9 that you will ever see... but if you neglect it... it will be 20Lbs of pure hell and mischief...

Don't know if you've made a decision yet, but Feists are the breed of choice for most squirrel hunters around here. Other good breeds to look at would be Patterdales, rat terriers, fox terriers, border terriers, and Irish terriers. As an all-around hunting dog, Airedales are pretty neat. They will tree squirrels, retrieve both waterfowl and upland game, and some even hog hunt with them.
